DNR snowmobile patrol targets St. Germain

MADISON -- Wisconsin's special snowmobile enforcement team concentrated on the St. Germain area for its second patrol effort of the season, issuing nine court appearance tickets to intoxicated snowmobilers the weekend of Jan. 29 to 31.

"Despite single-digit daytime and below zero nighttime temperatures, improved trail conditions in northern Wisconsin brought out many snowmobilers to the St. Germain area, where the team worked over the weekend," said Gary Eddy, Department of Natural Resources snowmobile safety administrator.

In a DNR news release, Eddy said Tuesday that the team and area wardens issued more than 45 citations and 95 warnings.

I was up there this past weekend and had heard they were citing folks coming out of Boulder Saturday night for speeding and loud exhauts. I know a few years back I'd seen them in Minocqua too at night with there decibel reader. Back in the day I remember seeing many many sleds at The Wale at night and there were hardly any Friday or Saturday this past weekend. Not sure if it was light traffic or effects from enforcement but, it makes you think.

Yep when you know the dragnet is out you go somewhere else. Just human nature to go away from hassles on the trail.

We had 18 from our club up there last weekend and went through St. Germain but never saw the WDNR. We did see a sherriff on a sled in Hiles just waiting for someone to make a mistake. Our group (we had 9 sleds) made sure that we made complete pregnant stops at every stop sign. Going through Eagle River then was a real treat to keep 9 sleds together.

Make sure you completly stop at every un-plowed driveway that are not being used....the little stopsign is what you need to follow......pretty stupid to give a ticket for it, but it happened to my wifes friend up in that area last weekend......

Two years ago we got ticketed on the lake in town for going past a shanty faster than 10 mph. They put a shanty right next to the trail and right next to the bridge. cost three of us 182.50 each. tried to fight it and we lost. sure looked like a trap to me. We do not sled anywhere near there anymore. There are alot better places to go and no hassleing by the DNR. When all the sledders go someplace else they will wonder why.

We were on North Twin Lake outside Conover last weekend and there was an ice shanty right next to the barrel marking the trail across the ice. I went way out of my way to go around the barrel/ice shanty and the sleds behind me followed. We discussed it at the next stop and thought he should have got the ticket. But, it is a public place and we need to respect them as well. But why would they want sleds parading by all day. I ice fish too and wouldn't fish on the trail!

my sister lives in Sayner , i could stay there for nothing but i chose to go to the U.P. where i have yet to see B.S. dnr set ups just to get tickets. How long will it take the state and business owners in Wisconsin to realize how much money they are losing out on?

I'm gald you brought up ice shantys on North Twin Lake as I met to post it but forgot. I'm not sure if barrels or ice shantys came 1st as the lake was marked very late due to thin ice but the shantys are very close to the marked trail & you could get a ticket. So beware they are there this year & more each week.
