Wisconsin Snowmobile Registration

Does anyone know if you have to have a residence in WI to register a snowmobile there? I live in Illinois and have registered sleds in IL and MI in the past. I am getting a new sled in the next week or so and want to register it in WI if possible although I don't have a residence there. I am a member of two WI clubs and want to take advantage of the discounted WI trail permit for club members, but you have to have the sled registered in WI also.

You do not have to be a resident to register in Wisconsin. I register in Wisconsin, we own a cabin in Hayward, but are not residents. I would rather pay my taxes and fees to the state where i ride than give it to Illinois. Only problem that I have run into is getting a trail sticker for Illinois, they want you to pay taxes plus the sticker fee, no dice.

Thanks for the response. I didn't know that IL has a trail sticker. Does it?

If your permanent residence is Illinois, you will have to register your sled there to ride it in Illinois. A friend of my riding bud found out the hard way, $$$$$. He was doing the same thing as you want to do. Also, the is the reciprocating thing. That is, there are some states, and Ontario, where it is "illegal to ride/operate" your sled without your home residence registration. I think Wis. laws are this way also. Most of this type law has to do with the liability issues. How ever, it seems it is still to your advantage to register as out of state in Wis..

Old Abe is correct, riding in Illinois without the sticker is a guaranteed ticket, even though most places they offer nothing to snowmobilers.

If your sled is in the state of Wisconsin for more than 15 days it is supposed to be registered in WI also.

Be sure to research where to buy the Illinois sticker - you are not going to get one at a gas station. Anyplace that sells fishing licenses can do it - but they don't all know how. Also bring clear tape or be sure to ask for the two sided sticker - it doesn't just stick on.
