I traveled this stretch of 41 on Saturday and noticed the substantial amount of open water and floating ice in this area where 41 crosses Lake Butte des Morts in Oshkosh. I don't mean to be insensitive but it makes me wonder what some people are thinking, or are they?

Authorities search for snowmobiler who went through ice
9:56 AM, Mar. 13, 2011

OSHKOSH — Crews from three fire departments and the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department dive team were searching Sunday for the operator of a snowmobile presumed drowned in Lake Butte des Morts near U.S. 41.

Sheriff’s Lt. Lara Vendola-Messer said a passerby on 41 saw the snowmobile enter an open stretch of water about 1,000 yards north of Skipper Bud’s marina and about 200 yards west of the Lake Butte des Morts bridge in the Town of Algoma shortly before 7 a.m.

“The witness immediately called the sheriff’s department and rescue crews responded,” Vendola-Messer said.

Air rescue boats from the Omro-Rushford fire departments and Neenah-Menasha Fire Rescue were used to search the water with assistance from the sheriff’s department dive team.

Crews on the ice said they could clearly see where the snowmobile entered the water, but could not find the sled or its driver.

As of late Sunday afternoon, search crews were still trying to locate the victim.

Vendola-Messer said the search would continue until dark.

“We will reassess the situation after that,” she said.

Authorities were not releasing additional information concerning the incident.

We should include condolences to the family and friends here. But all things considered, this area has been in the Thaw Mode for weeks, waterskipping at 7 a.m. on a Sunday, in an area commonly known for hazardous conditions...

Too many Red Flags to mention.

A news source in Madison has posted that officials believe they know who the snowmobiler is, and he was not familiar with the area. But I agree, it shoulda been daylight out by then right? How can you not see that big stretch of water?

Ecklunds Motorsports is located on the other side of the bridge. There's sometimes tracks along the shore in that area but rarely have I seen them out in the channel where this happened. The channel is the last to freeze in the coldest of temps and the first to open up in milder weather. Too bad and unfortunate.

Come on Really??? I thought his video was pretty sweet skippin water on the river myself.

you ever pull a body out off the water when they do stupid stunts and don,t make it ,its not fun to do plus it puts other peoples life at risk that have to try to rescue them. stunts like that give snowmobilers a bad name, god be with the family of the person missing hope they find them

Condolences to the family and friends of the victim.

Sunrise today was approx. 7:10 a.m., seems odd someone unfamiliar with the area, especially on that lake at that time of day would venture out for a ride.

Update

OSHKOSH — A search for a snowmobiler presumed drowned in Lake Butte des Morts ended Sunday without any sight of the driver. Authorities located the snowmobile, however. Sgt. Lori Seiler of the Winnebago County Sheriff's Department said divers would resume their recovery efforts at 8 a.m. today.

I missed this by minutes on Sun. I was on my way to work and was crossing the bridge at 6:36 a.m.
As far as being able to see....it was not dark but yet it was not sunny either kinda hard to explain, I do want to say that my head lights where on though!
I talked to a fire fighter today around 1:00 p.m. and as of then there was not a body recovered yet.
My condolences to the family.
