Wisconsin Trail pass for out of state visitors

Is it true that you should order your trail pass before you go to Wisconsin, so it can get mailed to you to put on your sled? If you wait until you are in Wisconsin to buy it, you only get a temporary pass to carry with you, and the real pass gets mailed to your home address?

In the past most local gas stations sold them or they can be purchased at DNR offices or ordered online. I am not aware that this has changed this season.
Go to the AWSC website.

Yeah they don't print them on the spot anymore. I bought one last Wednesday to ride and it came in the mail today. I had a piece of paper I just carried with me last week. Not a big deal I guess but they had the printer sitting right next to the register so I don't know why they stopped printing on the spot.

Yeah, no more over the counter stickers, but you can ride with the receipt which will be less of a hassle than last year now that it is "written" into the rules we can do so. Lots of confusion last year. Just make sure your sled is registered in your home state or you'll likely get a ticket. Its a protection against possible stolen sleds. Up in Grand Marais last weekend there were 12 Warden/Officers all over (and all at one place at one point) and wrote a ton of tickets for this. I don't disagree.....

I was told by the people at the gateway lodge that passes/permits could be purchased from the gas station there in land o lakes. Im not gonna buy one early then have to cancel my trip cause this weather sucks. If i knew for certain i would be on the trails i would buy ahead of time like i do the michigan permit but feb2-3 will be my only chance at a wisc trip with the wife. So i will be waiting till i drive the 8 hours from indy to lando to purchase the Wisconsin permit.

Couldn't agree more! Who wants more stickers on their sled? I can't believe how worked up some people are getting over this. LOL

Exactly! As I noted in the other thread Wisconsin Trail Pass - thumbs down:

In the past I've seen many posts in many threads bitchin' about needin' ta have too many stickers (registration plus trail passes from several states) on yer sleds. Now y'all are bitchin' about Wisconsin not giving you a sticker? :stupid:

PD,

Easy enough, just show them your papers. When is the last time you were stopped UP there? I've been going up there 3-5 times a year since 1993 and have been stopped once for going through a stop sign and checked for a trail pass another time up on South Boundary Road, both times were years ago. I agree it would be better if they could get the stickers right away, but it's not a big deal IMO. I have NEVER been checked in WI.

I usually go to the DNR office to do my registration and obviously in the past that meant get my trail sticker. When I went there this year to register a new sled they wouldn't even print my registration sticker at their office. They said everything comes in the mail now. I wasn't buying a trail pass, just registering the sled, didn't matter. I get the point you all are making about complaining about too many stickers, but I'd rather get it when I fill out the paperwork and pay.

Too many snowmobile related pieces of mail coming to the house just raises more questions at home :distrust:

I agree. I don't put any trail passes on my sleds. I carry them in my handlebar pouch. I do put the Wisc registration sticker on the tunnel instead of the hood. I don't like anything on the painted part of my sled.

GOOD !! Might take some of the drunks off the trail.....

Really?!?! I was stopped in WI because my "sticker was in the mail". Had my papers - not good enough. Put through the gauntlet. Ran DL. Checked vin. Checked exhaust. Where you live? Where you going? Where you coming from? "You been drinking?" No. I wasn't doing anything wrong and was hassled. All because my sticker was in the mail. You may be okay with tyranny, but I am not. Granted, I could have waited for the sticker, but when it snows, you need to take advantage.

BTW, I am nearly 50 years old and was riding a vintage snowmobile. Not running around and braaaappping every corner. Upset me so much, I put the sled back on the trailer and haven't been back out in WI.....just MI.

I was getting gas at Lando BP last Sat. A guy comes out holding a piece of paper asking me how I got my trail stickers. His are being sent to his home out of state and receipt is only good for 3 weeks, then sticker must be on sled or get a ticket. I told him I am a club member , registered in WI, and paid $10 a sled for trail stickers. He walked away mumbling! I was able to buy MI stickers there.

If you require a trail permit you should make it easily available to buy and put one on your sled. Period. End of story.
