Wisconsin's New Normal

After a week of ping pong, open & close, back and forth, up & down, it looks like Wisconsin is back in business. Some businesses will need some time reopening to follow the new guidelines but we should see some movement in coming days. This makes some of us happy to get on with our lives, others will continue to shelter and that's OK too. It's been two months to the day that I last went to work and it looks like I'll have the summer off too and I intend to make the most of it. During the last couple of months we've tried to support the small local businesses and will continue to do so. I think the coming weeks and months will tell us which ones make it and the others that don't. Also in the coming weeks we'll find out if there will be school in the fall and what it'll look like. Many of the summer events in our area have been cancelled due to the virus, 4th of July Fireworks, Car Shows, County Fairs, etc. It'll be interesting to see the "new normal" take shape. Because like it or not, it's coming.

Oh, almost forgot. If anyone sees my Stimulus check, let me know.

Ya that's a term the liberal media would love to stick. Oh and Gary I am heading to a car cruise in a bit. Hundreds of people. Having fourth of July fireworks extravaganza party here. Been working as per usual. Only thing changed is I have to make myself breakfast on Sunday mornings. I refuse to believe that there is a new normal. This is all political. It will be gone in November

I was thinking more in the way businesses that have been closed come back on line. Heck after the last two months what is normal?

I'm quite sure the media will be howling until election day depending on who wins, the New Normal will either die a quick death or live on into 2021. All I know for certain is I'm getting a haircut on Monday at 12:15 normal or otherwise.

There really is no need to jump on the term "New normal." It's only 2 words put together, neither liberal or conservative. It's a way for people to gather their thoughts on what the future might look like, because it will be different.

A couple of weeks ago I read an interview from a noted journalist (I'm too lazy to look it up). She was kind of a Debbie Downer, but her point was that life didn't return to normal after 9/11, we are living in that "New normal" from 19 years ago now. Think about air travel now vs pre 9/11. That's a new normal. Office buildings have security guards, ya gotta show an ID to get a hotel room. She gave other examples, but again, too lazy, point made.

My girlfriend is a life or death Packer fan, bleeds green and gold. The other day she got the bill for season tickets. She's questioning if she wants to mingle with 80,000 other people in Green Bay, a city with packing plant hotspots and open bars.

Now before y'all pull out your keyboards and bash the crap out of me with your declarations of Packer fandom and only pussies would be scared of Lambeau, the point is that things we know, things we are comfortable with, will change, as will our perceptions of them.

And the result of that will be our new normal. We aren't going back.

I'm involved with a grad student project at UWGB who wants to interview senior citizens about key points in their lives and how it affected them. I had planned on offering up two key points; the summer of 1968, and 9/11. Both of those materially changed "normal". I'm adding the shutdown of 2020 to my list as the effect on "normal" will be profound.

Yeah, DC made some good points there. What seemed Draconian after 9/11 became day to day stuff almost 20 years later. I think we'll do OK.
