Staying the Mason/Grand View area this weekend again.

Planning on heading up to Cornicopia, via Port Wing & Herbster, down through Valhalla, and back to Mason/Grand View area.
Any trail reports, and must see's, would be greatly appreciated.
Wife and I don't mind 200 mile days if the trails a decent.

Couple weeks ago, the Grand View area was epic.

Hoping for more of the same.

Old Baldy is a cool lookout, check out the big lake - you can get right up to it west of Port Wing. Plywood Palace if a dilapidated bar right on the Tri-Country Corridor is an interest find for you.

Is Old Baldy on Quarry Point? Google can't seem to locate.
Found the Plywood Palace via facebook. Looks very interesting.

Old Baldy is located southeast of Port Wing not west. Close to the intersection of 43 and 66. Best view of the lake is on trail 1 just east of the warming shack at 1/ 40 intersection.

You could also run up to the fire tower for a Kodak moment if you haven't been there yet? Just east of trail 19 and FR 439.

I was referring to checking out the shoreline of the big lake just west of Port Wing, not Old Baldy lookout which is SE of Port Wing as mentioned.

Old Baldy is labeled on the ATV map

Got it. Have waypoints marked for Old Baldy & Plywood palace. Where's this fire tower you speak?
Also, isn't there an old train car/cafe out in the woods someplace?
Thanks for all the tips. Should be another epic trip!

Like I said just east of trail 19 and fire road 439. About a half mile north of the Pub and Grub. The Delta Diner is right off of trail 4 and County road H.

There is an unobstructed view of the lake and the MN North Shore one 1 mile north on TR1 just past the TR41 intersection. Old Blady view is not what it used to be as the trees have grown. Another view is from the old ski jump at Valhalla looking north over the Valhalla warming shack, complete with a huge open fireplace, towards the fire tower Candyman mention. But that is getting overgrown as well as the fire tower but still worth it. Go up TR31 out of Valhalla and take a sharp left at the top of the hill where TR31 takes a 90 to the right.

Have fun and get off the trails and try the forest roads. The conditions will vary and remember, they are not groomed and they will have lots of snow. The PubNGrub is a great stop for food, gas (premium only $$$), and drink. #100 on the map.

Agree that Old Baldy view isn't what it used to be. There is an old school bus in the woods but that is in a top secret location ;)

You're right, the view isn't quite the same.

Will have to explore the forest roads next trip. All of the regular trails were excellent!

We'll be back!

Much appreciate everyone's help. Until next time...

Looks like you did a good job of finding everything!

Except the lake and that is a good thing. I fail to understand why riders feel the need to ride on Lake Superior, or any lake for that manner. I know, trails do cross lakes but not Lake Superior. Don't go there!

Amen. Any lake crossing is tabu for my Wife. I try to route land trails when ever possible. Lake Superior would sure to spell disaster.
Special thanks to Jeremy, at VV Mapping, for making routing so effortless. 99.9% of the trails are spot on.

Stay on trail or stay home.
Keep what trails we have.
Road riding is not that much fun.

Trails north of Hwy 2 do not cross any lakes and there a just a couple places to the south that require a small amount of lake crossing. That helps make Bayfield County a safer place to ride.

Glad you were able to enjoy riding in our area snowfish. Come on back and ride with Candyman out of woodsidecottages.com who will show you around and take you to places you never knew existed. He does that with many of their Winter guests. All good!
