Any idea what this plant is? I didn't plant it, it just showed up a couple of weeks ago and it's a fast grower which leads me to believe it's a weed of some sort. I was going to pull it but the wife said we should let it grow and see what it becomes. Only clue I have is that I put down a fresh layer of cedar mulch this spring, maybe it came in with that but it's the only one, no others. If you zoom in on the second picture the stem has a telescoping appearance and is in sections.

And then I'm reminded of the following fable...

Jack, a poor country boy, trades the family cow for a handful of magic beans, which grow into an enormous beanstalk reaching up into the clouds. Jack climbs the beanstalk and finds himself in the castle of an unfriendly giant. The giant senses Jack's presence and cries, “Fee, fie, fo, fum, I smell the blood of an Englishman!” Outwitting the giant, Jack is able to retrieve many goods once stolen from his family, including an enchanted goose that lays golden eggs. Jack then escapes by chopping down the beanstalk. The giant, who is pursuing him, falls to his death, and Jack and his family prosper.

There is an app called "picturethis" you just take a picture with your smart phone and it identify's the plant/weed/tree! I am horrible at all that so the app works well for me.

In addition to identifying flowers and plants, these apps can be used to identify products, books, and in Google Lens' case, even places. Google Lens is currently available as a standalone app for Android users while iPhone owners get Google Lens bundled as part of the iOS version of Google Photos
