Droid X on sled

Hey everyone. I just purchased a Droid X Motorola cell phone and I am wondering if anyone has mounted it to their sled and use the GPS feature when riding. I have found a mount and waterproof case for it. I am wondering how they hold up in the cold and the bumping around on the sled. Thanks

bad idea. the screen will slowly dim and not refresh very well because its soo cold, and your battery life will be about 25 minutes on a full charge because of the cold. its not meant to be used in those conditions.

I'm wondering if any phone has the ability to upload snowmobile trail maps? It is nice to have the trails on GPS. But, it would be nice to carry one less electronic device. Thankfully, the cameras on phone are now better, but still have not found out if trail maps can be uploaded.

What is it with phones now BTW? Less phone signal connection seems to be a pretty common issue with new phones and more features. A phone should work as a phone, right?

OK, that is a complete load of discrepancy. But I usually carry the camera and GPS and I'm running out of pockets.:eek:

I have the droid x and whenever I lose 3G I also lose maps. I would bet that most of the trails will not have 3G coverage. Just something else to think about.

Does the phone have the ability to upload (download) trail maps? Sure it has the ability to do that , what is missing is the app for that purpose. It is not a hardware question, it is a software question.

Not sure about your issue with less voice availability. I usually find data is a problem well before voice becomes an issue.

If the trail maps are available in PDF form you can save these on your iPhone using the iBooks app. I'd imagine most smart phones should have the capability as well. Must keep the phone warm, though.

I'm not worried about looking at the maps. I was more concerned about being able to use the GPS snowmobile maps. Seems like the only time I need a map is when I'm lost.;)

BTW, it is easy to find Michigan maps online but not so easy to find Wisconsin snowmobile trail maps. Are they trying to keep the trails a secret down there?

Went to the Verizon store yesterday for info on related items. They said keep phone in pocket, warm and dry. But you can get an app. that may work wonders. Mine came with this. Google maps, Latitude app. lets you track locations of your friends who allow you to set it up. Kinda like a spot locator but far more convenient. I think this would work out west in areas with cell signal. Works like MARPA does on my boat radar. You can find and know where everyone is in the fog or behind a mtn. I have had times were we lost a group rider out west (stuck behind a tree) 1/4 mile away and spent an hour looking for them in a frantic search. It maybe a safety item. There is an app called My tracks. I use it mainly for hiking, but I suppose you could use it for tracking with snowmobile also. I agree with the earlier posts though, keep it warm and dry. Droid does not like to be out in the cold. He is kind of a wimp when it comes to weather, he gets all confused:confused:
