Trailer theft prevention

An aquaintance recently had his tailer and two sleds stolen out of his yard. Had a lock on the hitch but the cops filling out the report said that crooks will use the next size smaller ball, therefore the hitch, even though locked, can be dropped onto the ball and they haul the trailer away. Recommend taking a ball and cut off the mounting bolt and then lock it into the hitch. Already put one on mine.

That will help but my friend had his stolen, they found the trailer
around the corner behind the fire barn with a hunk of chain they
used to snatch the trailer and sleds. Sleds gone, probably into an enclosed.

A boot style is best.

They make locks so that people cannot set the trailer on any ball. I have one for mine. I suppose if they were determined enough they could just hook the chains and drive away. I have a motion light shining on my trailer, and a dog that barks if anything comes into the yard, including birds, squirrels, gusts of wind.....

I saw a hitch lock advertised here on john dee. I think it was called a krok lock. I have one made by master lock that is a ball that gets locked into the tongue.

I talked to the guys selling this at Novi. I almost bought one but I was feeling my wallet. I suppose I should buy one. It's better than losing 2 sleds and a trailer.

Google a Gorilla Lock. I have one and one time they tried sawing through it and pounded it with a hammer. It hardly hurt the lock at all. They aren't cheap, but worth the $.

The cutoff ball is very basic and can be defeated by loosening the same nut that holds in the locking part of the tongue, so you need something that covers that screw. Then the next problem is if you tongue is removable (two thru bolts) even locks can be overcome by taking the whole tongue off and that only takes a minute if that ( I know this as I had to take the tongue off to fit the trailer in my garage and it made me think of the possible ways the trailer could be stolen in only a minute or two).
So the best method I came up with is something that locks the tires, like a Denver boot device. I bought one years ago that is a metal tube shaped like a "J" and a bracket that goes under a lug nut.
Just throwing it out there if you are needing to lock up the trailer it is best to cover as many bases as possible.

5 gallon bucket...2 pieces of pipe welded in a T shape..just tall enough to to be flush with the top of the bucket...weld whatever size ball you have to the top of the pipe....so you have a upside down T with a ball welded to it...fill bucket with quick crete with ball in the center......works well

I use a 3/4 inch motorcycle cable lock and put it throught both tires so the only way is to drag it and it won't get to far.

The boot style is probably the best deterent. My lock is the shape of the ball and has a hoop that goes over the hitch. It works well, but with two bolts you can take the whole hitch off of the tongue of the trailor. Nothing is 100% secure, if the scum bags have enough time they'll get it.

I have the light thing too. Also the dog that barks at the same stuff yours does. He also barks and growls at nothing like darkness. Drives me nuts sometimes.
