I am sorry to all the lefties on here, and don't mean to be political, but Obama has not done jack crap.

Having re-read my post, I think it might be a bit harsh, and I certainly don't want to make Skylar mad as I do not wish to join the ranks of the banished! But I left the post intact and thought I would lead with my little disclaimer here.

It's just that I get so mad when people frame our economic issues as left/right. They are not left/right, they are issues of class and economic rights. I'm an American, 58 years old, and I was raised to believe any body could achieve anything, we all got an equal start. It isn't that way anymore. And we waste our time arguing about left/right. What a scam!
Skylar, you are corrrect, Obama hasn't done crap. Neither did Bush, neither will the next person.

Now on to my original rant!
**********************************************************

Skylar, that is pure crap. The situation this country is not a left/right issue. It is an issue of economic stratification and the fact that the top 1% of the population now controls 42% of the nation's wealth.

Ninety three percent of the nation's wealth is controlled by 10% of the population.

27 million Americans are unemployed or underemployed

37 million Americans are on food stamps

25% of our nation's children are being raised in poverty, making it the largest American generation to be raised in poverty since the Great Depression

The bottom 90% of Americans hold 73% of the debt

Meanwhile, as we continue to export jobs and eviscerate our middle class we create massive government assistance programs that we fund by issuing mountains of debt to pay for what used to be paid for by people working, thus destroying our future generations' ability to solve this problem.

And yet, we still fight it out as left vs. right. Do you suppose the top 1% of families laugh openly at us while we continue to fight each other rather than them?

DCSnomo - I genuinely enjoy your posts although I sometimes disagree with you on politics. I definitely agree that neither Bush nor Obama have been good overseers of the economy. Bush spent like a drunken sailer and like no one before him, and Obama has essentially doubled or trippled-down on this policy. Unemployment doubled in the brief period of time that Pelosi and Reid ran Congress and set the tone for the country's economic priorities. I don't really think this is a class issue as much as a government problem. Many people in the country are unemployed. I recently read that 1 of 5 able-bodied men are unemployed. But how many are not working as a result of the 99 weeks of welfare we hand out? How much of the jobs that have been lost have actually been exported vs. eliminated via productivity improvements? How many of the jobs that actually have been exported are the result of "greed" vs. the fact that US-based manufacturing has been regulated nearly into extinction? How many jobs are not created because Companies refuse to take risks as a result of uncertainty regarding upcoming tax and regulatory changes (Cap and Trade, Obamacare, concerns about how to pay for the massive and growing Federal deficit and debt (including the unfunded liabilities the feds go not recognize) along with various state shortfalls)? We are in a massive hole but I think it's the government policies (that voters are ultimately responsible for by continuing to put these people in office) rather than the upper class. Virtually 50% of the population pays $0 in income taxes - how much more can we do for them?

Back to the gas question, though, it's way past time to accelerate the development of our own fossil fuels. Enough with the green energy push for a little while, and let's focus on what we have and what actuall works.

I know for a fact that the top 5% laugh openly at us. I run with a few of them and they really tone it down in my presence, but I know the laugh all the way to the bank. Those 95% folks are refered to as the "factory" mindset. And it is true. Legalized slavery is all it really is.

Sounds to me like all we need to do is get "Anenity" and Guido to knock off that top 10%, pay them a nice "commission" and then divvy up what is left of the 93% of this nations wealth among-st ourselves.

Problem solved.

By the way, Whitedust- you sure could be right. Economic forecasting is just like weather forecasting.... Nothing more than an educated guess at best. I guess I have just heard so many that have made a very good living (most of them probably in that top 10%) say the same thing. I have no personal ideas, but based on what I have heard, my guess would be things will get worse before they truly get better. I just hope it is not that much worse as I do believe we and the world are teetering on the brink and it would not take too much more pushing for us all to fall into the unknown.

One more "by the way", while I am on my hijack.... How many of you would be any different if you were in the top 10%? Be honest.

dcsnomo,

I don't see where Skylar is making this a left or right thing, he simply said Obama hasn't done "jack crap", that's all. And that comment is impossible to argue with. He has no ideas of his own and doesn't even get involved in important issues until it's almost too late. He's done that over and over again on every important issue and has done it again with the debt ceiling issue. If you want a guy that can make a speech and is in campaign mode 100% of the time, he's your man. However, if you want someone that will get things done, he falls way short.

I will admit it John, money especially big money will change a person even if they don't wish it to. Most the time not for the better. We do have a few fantastic billionaires in my neighborhood who do share the wealth more than they have to.

Unemployment is much more than a % number when it hits close to home Ala. Skylar.......I know I have been their 2-3 times in my life & always came out better for the change eventually. I'm retired so looking back I have done better than some & not as well as others. I don't think I would change much in my life .........it is what it is...... so if anything I look up & down the income levels & wonder why people complain about their status? If you don't like your current situation change it. All this complaining is a waste of time be proactive be a changer do something positive for yourself. IMO the sky is not falling we are going thru a slow patch caused by rising gasoline prices & a stock market correction has also happened which is a good thing. Both commodities & stock prices are down a bit so manufacturing in turn can now also make good profits without increasing prices. The USA banks & auto industry have been bailed out & are behind us as well. Europe is adjusting to their economic woes following the USA template. It isn't all milk & honey but the world is headed in the right direction to better times. If you think a collapse is coming you are really saying we are on the brink of a World economic disaster that will be life changing for everyone ....nothing like the slow patch we are in now. You have to accept there is NO MONEY LEFT for bailouts we have to recover from here. IMO we will but it won't be quick or easy.

Well, like I say, it is all just opinion and no one knows for sure what the future will bring. I will say that the persons I talk about look at WAY more than just unemployment #'s, stock and commodity prices. In fact, they talk about things that I have no clue what they are even talking about!

You have always been a pie-in-the sky optimist about our economy Whitedust, even in 2008. Nothing wrong with that, but I guess I just tend to focus more on reality. I am by no means a doom and gloom gloom kind of guy and anyone that knows me will say that I am a very positive thinker. I have just been trained to pay attention to all that is going on around me and many times it is not all steak and Lowenbrau. I completely agree that no matter how bad things get, a person can always fight their way out of it and come out for the better. I have done it several times in many aspects of my life.

I did not think Skylar was complaining about his company filing chapter 11, he was just stating REALITY and no amount of optimism is going to change that reality. The truth is, the company should come out of chapter 11 in better financial shape- that is what the process is for. What that will mean for Skylar and others there I do not have the answer, only the officers of the company and the lawyers know that.

dcsnomo - I also agree with mspease that I did not think Skylar was making a political statement. Just stating that he though Obama has not done crap. You even agreed with that and for what it is worth seemed to make the issue political.

So I guess it is stay tuned to see where we go from here!

To me all you have to do is look @ 2008 & today things have improved. The frustration is that improvement has been slow in time & value. Skylars' situation may get much better. I talked to a WI bank today & they are considering lending out more mortgage money which will finally allow an uptick in real-estate prices which results in more building & home improvements. Home improvement has been hit the hardest but things are getting better just hang in there.:)

What set me off is the "I apologize to all you lefties" statement, like somehow people on the left are doing better than those on the right? Or somehow we're too stupid to realize there is a nationwide problem regardless of political beliefs? I know Obama is ineffective, I'm not an idiot.

Don't apologize to me, don't patronize me.

See and I took the "I apologize to all you lefties" to mean that Obama is the lefties guy and he was about to say something unflattering about him.

Nowhere did I read him saying that he thought one side was doing better than the other.

Perhaps you just read a little too much into the statement dcsnomo?

PS-

Quite possible, except he didn't say all THE lefties, he said all YOU lefties.

But, in the interest of family peace and harmony, I admit I was w,w,w,w (wait a minute, this is hard) wrong. I apologize for any discontent.

I just hate it when people are classified, as it completely negates the person's intellect, reasoning, and individual thought. Ohh, you're a "lefty"! I would never call anybody a "rightie." I would learn about their ideas and debate them till the beer runs out and all the other people in the bar have left, but I would never put them in a box.

I shall now retreat to my online backgammon game and lick my wounds!

Wading right in....as Whitey says, this is a complex issue...and not one that can be solved by reduced oil prices, or lower gasoline prices.

Thanks to many the issue is far bigger and broader. We are now a world economy and what happens in Timbuktu reflects on all other countries economies.

While I do think that the price of gasoline falling is surely going to help, and even if companies have found a way to keep making money without hiring workers, we are in an area of recovery or free-fall that we have never been to before. I honestly don't think that our government knows how to react, and the old "stand by" measures that worked before aren't and won't work to get us out of the mess we are in.

If you have someone as inexperienced as Bush, and Obama in the cat bird seat, they are no better than the folks that they surround themselves with and who are poking and prodding the MAN in a particular direction which up to now, hasn't done much.

So you look at our current state of economy and I have to hand it to Whitey as he stays the course and faithfully walks the line. Personally I am nervous as a cat, and don't know whether to eat or crap.

The fundamentals have changed. Are we paying too much tax, or not enough? Should we broaden our attack on expansion in a world economy or pull back and take care of our own knitting?

Who understands what needs to be done....my confidence with the big boys is completely gone. They are back throwing spaghetti on the wall, and seeing what happens. rhetoric is flying around like world war 2 propaganda.

And Skylar, if I were you I would get cracking on finding a new job, because the counter top business isn't going to flow until the housing market picks back up and the foreclosure business is alive and healthy and prices are still going down...I don't care what the last number indicates.....so buddy, you are in a pickle....I just don't think that you know it yet.

Oh, and just to throw this back on the original track again....one which John took a detour and caused all this ruckus....

The point of releasing the S/Fund was to throw a wrench in the speculative market and if all countries release at given times and the folks who live in the sandy areas hold their promise to pump more crude....it will go a long way in bringing those prices down and that is going to help....if nothing more than folks will start driving again and they HAVE to do that to buy stuff. If you aren't IN a store, you won't be buying anything...and that drives the economy.

Okay...carry on....back to work...I'll check back later for the sarcastic comments.

… You want the rich to pay 95% of their income to pay off the debt for taking care of people that dont feel like working? …

In that regard, it is interesting to recall some historical U.S. income tax rates, and the years in which they were in effect (check those top marginal rates in the rightmost column.

Historical marginal income tax rates for Married Filing Jointly at stated income levels.:

Hmmm, such a severe top marginal tax rate during many of our boom years. Howja s'pose that worked, eh?

(I'm not necessarily suggesting that such a scheme would be useful in today's economy, just some historical perspective, and food for thought.)

Right on moose good stuff! Skylar watch an older movie "Other People's Money" & supports moose about your current position. Time for a change IMO & best to just do it on your terms while you can. I wish the best for ya but don't get caught flat footed!
