I have never ever seen as many acorns coming off of my trees as there are this year.... Someone was trying to tell me that it is a sign of a long hard winter ahead. Could this be true??

We have 3 Hickory trees at our camper that has been dropping nuts for at least a month now. Last year it hardly dropped a thing and our snow was marginal at best. I do hope it means something good for us in snow!

You guys are all nuts!!!

I'm not much of an expert on trees or squirrels but I would think that if we have a bumper crop of acorns, maybe it was a good year for the trees. As in good moisture, no insects, etc.

That being said, I'm also hoping for snow up to my eyeballs this year. Think Snow!

One of my favorite things to do is strike up a conversation with someone that knows my profession. Then I say something like this: "Yea, I was walking in the woods with my dogs the other day, I stopped and looked down and the ground was just covered in acorns!. You know what THAT means, right?" The person will usually go into something about a long hard winter and I say: "Well, I don't know about a long hard winter, but it does mean I was standing under an oak tree!".

By the way, I am still conducting my interviews with the woolly worms, so the seasonal outlook will be out in early to mid Oct.

Good one John. Last year I had tons of acorns and no snow. this year so far no acorns. I suspect it has to do a lot with the weather cycle during the summer more than anything.

It is one of those years where hard hats are recommended while mowing the lawn around our neck of the Oak city.

Does that mean more snow?
Not likely.
It does mean more squirrel traffic. The dang buggers are busy this year and they look healthy. Might be a good year to try some new soup.
