The wife is planning on renting a cottage this winter around the Bessemer area. She and her friends are going to go skiing,(black jack, big powder horn) and my buddies and I are going to go on the sleds. Just wondering if there is much for off trail opportunities over there compared to where we usually go in the Keweenaw. What direction would be wise for us to go in. Thanks.

go to wakefield and go north. there are limited areas off trail 8 hedding to bergland. once you get to highway 2 you can run the right-a-way.

Head to Iron County WI or up to Porkies for off trail stuff.

I am pretty sure that all land north of South Boundary Road, the snowmobile trail in winter, is the Porcupine WILDERNESS state park, therefore, no motorized vehichles?

I'm bad ......Yep should have said head towards Porkies area as as general direction as thought that is what he was asking. Do UPMI off trail homework or Iron County WI off trail on their map. This is never an easy question to answer without GPS coordinates & nobody going to do that. I try to help as many people as I can to enjoy sleddin in northern WI & UP but off trail is a sensitive matter as have to steer clear of private land & wilderness land.

Go east of Wakefield to Presque Isle River and head north into the National Forrest. Lotsa good stuff in there all the way to So. Boundary Road!

Yes, I know going up to Twin Lakes area and north are great areas. How long of ride would that be from Bessemer do you think? I have looked at the Iron County maps also. I belong to a snowmobile club and I know what can happen when snowmobilers go where they are not suppose to be, so I am very cautious about that sort of thing. Thanks all for the help.

Yea we usually ride from Calumet and north. We know alot of spots up there, but my wife wants to go skiing and rent a cottage for a bunch of people so we have to go somewhere else. I asked if she wanted to ski Mt. Bohemia but after seeing it this fall, and not being on skis in 2yrs she said no.

I know a few locals who love to show people around. Both are frequent posters here and enjoy showing their secret spots.
