Why is off trail riding more fun than trail riding in your opinion?

Hmmm, we call reckless trail riders Ricky Racer, maybe we should call the same guy, who suddenly thinks he is an off trail rider, Bobbie Boondocker?
Could it be "tedsledisdead" or one of the many personalities that follows?? Was a Mohawk involved? Inquiring minds always want to know??? Skylar, how about Danny Ditchbanger? Was a 121 with a triple involved???

I started riding in the late 60's while growing up in the Yoop. I have always looked at snowmobiling as both riding on and off trail as several previous posters stated (i.e Peter, Wisyooper1). I fully understand the increased interest in off-trail riding. It's a lot of fun to explore by escaping the groomed trail and turning onto a forest road. Cruise the forest road until you see a two track that's appealing. You follow that until it either turns into a one track or you turn onto a one track. Follow that until it either dead ends, opens up to a meadow or it hooks onto another trail (some times another groomed trail). I always have a very good detailed map with me. (I'm lucky, the area I ride has a very good map that shows forest road numbers). A long track definitely helps as the snow can be deep and at times untouched. Nothing better than being the first one out after a dumping. I realize that I'm fortunate in that I grew up in the Yoop and am comfortable straying from the marked trails. I also make sure that I'm not trespassing. For those sticking to the groomed trails, you're having fun but you may be missing out on some additional fun depending on your likings.

What types of maps do i need to buy to show me forest/logging roads? Are there online maps that are free to download?

ya which im sure they will...Luckily we know enough areas they never will so we can still go where theres no traffic or any tracks even for that matter

I use an old-fashioned hardcopy map. The area I ride has one of best when it comes to detail. I haven't tried GPS or online maps so I can't speak to those devices.

You can get maps of the Forest Service roads from the Headquarter of the Forest your going to be in. Or call them and if they have them they will send it u you.

I agree with most on here but I have very limited off trail experience, but I want a bunch more! I starting riding actually off trail at an old cranberry marsh and still ride there today. Its a smaller area but it has large hills, good jumps, and a good sized forest. It links up with 2 other marshes that I have permission to ride. Its a good time but I dont have the right equipment or riding skill to really go off the trail in most places.

Used to ride offtrail back in 2000 when nobody did and it was great. Fresh tracks everywhere and truly free space to carve and blast pow. Now I have to get out early when it snows to make use of thee fresh snowfall.

I know what you mean, I remember when trail 13 from Twin Lakes to Greenland wasn't a trail yet. Now that was a lot of fun!

I agree Kimmer. Off-trail is too dangerous for the inexperienced. Besides worry about rocks, stumps, trees, rivers, creeks, stucks, getting lost, etc.... you also need to worry about things that want to eat you such as wolves, cougars and the elusive squatches.

BELIEVE!

we should all keep telling the newbies how to get into off trail riding so that soon enough theres no areas left untracked and areas start getting closed and become off limits because people dont know where they are and end up making a land owner mad or getting hurt. IMO
