Marathon County & Mosinee, WI question

Hello-

In the event the Marathon County trails ever open we are taking a trip from Stratford, WI over to the Shawano area. The two areas that will be a problem will be getting across the WI river and getting past I-39. For the interstate I can go under the bridge at Mosinee - but how do I get across the river?

Looking at the Marathon county maps it doesn't appear there is a dedicated trail - I'm assuming people run half moon lake on the north side of Mosinee?

Thanks for any input. Here is the map I'm referencing.

The only place to cross 39 anywhere near Wausau is either up by Brokaw, or down south of the border of Marathon county. There are no trails any where else that go across, since the one that use to go through Wausau got closed down since idiots couldn't keep slow on a road trail in a residential area. And I'm not sure I would trust the river going through Mosinee since a lot of water is flowing through there.

We use to run right across the bridge by the mill. It was a marked trail a few years ago, but not sure if it is still legal to do so. You may have to go all the way around over rib mountain, hit lake Wausau and hook up with the mountain bay trail from there. There used to be a marked trail through the Harley davidson shop in Wausau to do this, but unsure about the legality of this as well.

Hmmm.... I'm putting a lot of faith in being able to go under the bridge in Mosinee. That definitely shows on the map and I seem to recall seeing markers there.

North of Mosinee is Half Moon lake. That isn't really a river... there are cars driving on it now... so I know it's safe. It's just a question of where I go once I get on there.

Halfmoon lake is not safe to cross the main river. Someone tried last year and fell through the channel. Your correct about going under the bridge for the highway. That's the trail that we used to use to cross the bridge by the mill. But please don't try and hammer across the river on half-moon. You will find nothing but trouble

There are signs that say motorized vehicles are prohibited on the bridge sidewalks now, which is dumb cause they made it wide enough to be able to fit a sled.

Thanks for the replies. I'll have to call somebody who is familiar with the Mosinee trail system to see how to get across the river there - if it's even possible. Looking at that detailed map of Marathon county they do dead-end that trail on the east side of the river... which seems weird to me.

I know some, or maybe all, clubs are out panning trails today. Things are looking up.
