They don't teach the "all clear signal" in snowmobile safety class!!

I was there.... 100% sober.... they went over the various hand signs people may see other snowmobilers do and this was one of them. I don't have video so you'll just have to take my word for it I guess.

they ALSO state in the class that IF you use the "all clear" signal.... if somebody ahead of you gives the signal that it is still YOUR resposibility to STOP and look both ways. that is if the instructor is teaching the class right...

Also necessary to have spotter directing traffic if waving sleds thru. Really don't do it too dangerous & never let your guard down when crossing roadways.

i remember when i was a young child...my parents taught me to STOP..and LOOK both ways before crossing the road. it kinda been common sense since! ahhaha...i guess that doesnt apply to people from certain geographical locations

While riding our Harleys with a large group we will send the front two out on the road to stop traffic so the rest of us can go directly through an intersection. Maybe us sledders could start doing this and we won't have to ever worry about stop signs again!! Just a thought????

Wait a minute!!! Are these even enforceable stop signs? We're not driving snowmobiles on the roads in traffic with cars and trucks. Aren't these merely a heads up that the snowmobile trail crosses a road? We did check for traffic fair and square. Would a cross country skier or dog sledder come to a complete stop?? Would they have gotten a ticket??? Would each dog on the dogs led have gotten a ticket? Did every dog have a license AND a trail sticker? ?? Dang, charge every pooch $45 for a trail sticker and the cops could drive hummers!!! By the way, I've yet to see a dog sledder pick up his dogs terds when they use our trails..

I was stopped for going through a stop sign on a non plowed road with the groomer one time, i mark that trail ,,, no more stop sign there. we had a club trail marked at 5mph near a marsh so people would slow down for wet spots , wi dnr had a field day there pulling over sleds going 15mph! We took down the sign as they were writing tickets to three sleds , dnr was pissed. no more speed limit signs( still 55 at night) As far as club trails, that our trails no funding from dnr we mark we maintain and do all leg work

So somehow you standing in the road waving your arms makes it legal to disobey a traffic sign...? Hmmm sounds like a ticket/accident/lawsuit waiting to happen. If there was no police/traffic officer there directing traffic then I would go around the "arm waving" man and keep on driving if I had the right of way.....

Don't know how this would play with LEO?? But he/she would be big Ahole IMO to ticket any sleds with a spotter. Just saying.....

Glad you where 100% sober because that was brought up at the last DNR safety instructor meeting that no alcohol is allowed in the class room. Waving a group of sleds across the road without them stopping is not in the instructor manual. May have been back in the 70's when I was a kid! I teach in WI so maybe some other states have different rules

Mearly a heads up that your crossing a road!? are you serious right now! its a Fu*king STOP sign....if your on a horse, bike, dog sled, x-country ski, ATV, heck even walking if theres a STOP sign it means stop and then they can ticket you or stop you for not doing so...i cannot belive the things being said on here. Ya we all have done it...its like speeding. If you get busted thats their right to do so.

Was the sign put up by the MI dot or was it put up by a local club? That portion of the trail is very close to and parallels the road. I dont think itsa road in real life. In MI who can put up a stop sign? If a private club or private person puts up a stop sign is it enforceable by a cop or DNR guy?

Apperantly you have never riden with a large group of bikers. I couldn't tell you how "legal" this is, but that's the way it works....like it or not. And going around them wouldn't be the smartest decision. Just sayin. As far as doing this on sleds.....I was making a funny :) (sense of humor is OK)

"Safe Riding Hints

-Always keep your machine in top mechanical condition.
-Always wear insulated boots and clothing including a helmet and gloves.
-Never ride alone. Always go with a friend on another snowmobile.
-Avoid, when possible, crossing frozen bodies of water.
-Never operate in single file when crossing a frozen body of water.
-Always be alert to avoid fences and low-strung wires.
-Never operate on a street or highway.
-Always look for depressions in the snow.
-At an intersection, come to a complete stop, raise off the seat and look for traffic.
-Always check the weather before you go.
-Leave a travel plan.

and if the trail has a STOP sign YES they can and will enforce it. they can do anything they want. like the guy who said he marked the trails and had a 5mph sign up and they enforced the speed limit. the trails are funded by the state and the state (including police and DNR) enforces the trails.
that particular trail is open year around for ATV, horseback, bicycle, hikers to use and the sign stays up year around because they have to STOP too! if they dont (which i know they all dont) they could be ticketed. Maybe in MN stop signs are optional but its attitudes like yours is why trails get shut down or enforcement gets tighter in areas. All it takes is one person to say snowmobilers are blowing the stop signs and the law will be there enforcing and ticketing if needed. this sounds a bit political for my style but a good quote is "SNOWMOBILING IS A PRIVLIDGE...NOT A RIGHT"
