As some of you may already know, My name is Erick Baccus and I'm going to attempt to break a world record on July 14th 2012. The record I'm going after is, the Farthest distance on a snowmobile on water. I'm going to try to beat this record on the Houghton/Portage Canal. Below is a little about me and my personal and racing background.

I started snowmobiling at the age of five. My first snowmobile was a 1986 Yamaha Phazer 440! I started off just driving around the fields, and then progressed to driving on the trails with my friends as we grew up. At age 16 I started to drag race my snowmobile which was a 1992 Arctic Cat EXT. I didn’t win many races but I didn’t care because all I wanted was to race my snowmobile and get an adrenaline rush. After my first year of racing I joined a local race team and raced the winter of 2004. After the race season I graduated from High School and joined the United States Marine Corps on June 21st 2004. Now after a little less than eight years in the Marine Corps I got out honorably and back home trying to get back into racing. I recently purchased a 2003 Arctic Cat F7 and in the process of making this sled race ready. On July 14, 2012 I’m going to attempt to break the world record of Farthest Distance on Water on a Snowmobile and I am currently looking for Sponsors! Any kind of help would be much appreciated. The start and finish will be held at the Super 8 waterfront park in Houghton, Mi. This event is going to be filmed by Fox News, and the Daily Mining Gazette (our local newspaper) will also be there. I'm working on more. Please find me on Facebook or you can email me at son_of_254@hotmail.com, or you can contact me at (906)370-0899

Erick, I would assume that you have an approved & mapped area that will be permissible for you to do this. I would also assume that the area that you are going to run this will be closed off to other traffic while you are attempting this. Do you have any contingency plans in the event the weather does not co-operate? 70 miles? can you carry enough fuel for that distance? I am hoping I can be there to witness this. I bought tickets to see Jeff Dunham at the Island Resort in Harris MI on that day about 1 month ago. Any idea what time you may begin? Can you post a map of your intended area to run? I wish you all the luck, I am hoping I can make it. BTW, your service to our country is Greatly appreciated.-Mezz

Mezz,

He should not have to have any aproved route. All that he has to do is follow the rules of a pwc and he can run the waterway. It would be nice to have traffic blocked off to keep down on the waves but you can make it past a few and keep rolling without to big of an issue.

I do have a good idea of where i will be riding the canal. But, the coast guard and sheriff cannot stop traffic so i'll hope it doesn't get to busy. The only set back up having right now is coming up with a device to say how far i have gone. (Like an odometer type deal for a snowmobile) and a recovery boat. Everything else is pretty much in order! Obviously still looking for sponsors, and vendors. I'm have a custom fuel tank being made that is 21 gallons. I plan on starting around 9am. Any other questions feel free to ask!

Good luck to you! 1 full lap of the 'canal' from the North Entry to the South Entry and back is about 48 miles if you zip straight across Portage Lake and don't venture into Torch Bay.

A on board GPS should tell you how far you've gone. Rig up a inflatable raft on the back, so if your going down you can pull the cord. It may help with the recovery.

Hey Eric,

I do not want to be a downer but i think you have to go over 70 miles. You might want to validate this article http://www.amsnow.com/en/News/Cool News Archive/2006/11/New water record.aspx

Joe

Joe, your not a downer. I've seen many like this all the time. It only takes 30 days to be validated in the Guiness Book of World Records. They apparently didn't have enough evidence. That's not the main reason why i'm doing this anyway. It's all for charity!
