Last weekend I was riding near Pembine and I met a group of sleds and they gave the hand single for 4 sleds 3 guys went by and the four was nowhere to be seen , I then can up to a sharp curve and had a feeling that the fourth guy was still coming so I pull way to the side and even stopped ,and just then he came around the corner on my side of the trail trying to catch up to his buddies. Point is if I wasn't expecting another sled it would have been a head on collision . So hand signals do help !

wow..great point..i give them..dont expect to recieve them...

Oh yeah big problem in the UP just ask Skylar. You can be riding at a fast pace in UP come around a wide sweeper then hit the binders to to avoid groomer very embarassing & I have had some close calls with groomers too.... I admitt it! Some communicaters offer groomer audio warning which IMO is a good thing.

[Raising my hand guilty as charged.] Riding with the family and not even going that fast. On trail 5 south of Republic around a corner and over a hill. It happened six years ago and I remember it like it was yesterday. Bet the groomer remembers it too. Thank God for Wilwood Brakes.

I was on my side of the trail. But he was on both.;)
Now that I remember, thank God for reverse too. We all had to back up the hill because we had no way to get around him either.:)

riders hitting a groomers really sucks,,,,I'd been hit while driving the groomers twice. First time a guy was on a brand new sled with 33 miles and did $2300 damage, last one was a slight bang and hurt sledders pride more than anything, he wouldn't even acknowledge he hit me and took off after turning his sled back upright and his girl jumping back on, idiots!

Hand signals are for posers. They just give a warm fuzzy feeling and offer more danger than not. Really think about it. start a pro/con list and then add in some real life and then you will understand why they are no longer helpfull. To much error in the signaler is a major issue.

Wayne you ever give a fellow biker the "tap on the top head" as they pass you?

no, Pat I never have. must be a regional thing. I truely am not familiar with that. we do point at dead animals on the road and when to single file and that"s about it.

the tap on top head is one the oldest MC hand singles there is....not regional thing....its the same as flashing lights....we use hand signal is big groups as its way safer than blinkers\lights....the tap on head I am sure you have had it given to you you just did not know what it was......now you do.....

see hand signal have a time and place......

Nope, we don't use that signal at all. Heck a Springer with an old tired Evo in it makes speeding a rare occasion and as Road Captain for our group I simply do not speed. But I will put it in our list of hand signals.

my point......for those of you who say hand signal are pointless cuz most don't know them...I say you did not take the state safety course!! all the states that have sled trails offer it. Mn mandate it for anyone who was born after 1976.......maybe your decision to NOT use hand signals falls in line of you never took a safety class????kinda like a car, you need to pass your DL exam so you understand the rules of the road.........

no but Indian Larry did....

and look where that got him!

I had snowmobile safety back in 1972 and hand signals were taught. In Michigan I am all for manditory snowmobile, Boating and Hunter safety at all ages.

I also remember in drivers training that turn signals are required to be used when changing lanes and/or turning. This simply is not the case around here. I suspect it is to hard to text, drive, signal, hollar at the kids, put makeup on (ladies), Drink coffee or beer, and fiddle with the radio all at the same time, so the turn signal activity got pushed to the side. Besides all the soccer mom's drive around in those 3/4 ton suburbans, Escolades, H2's and whatever that beast that windingtrailgal drives. (I am sure Cindy signals). So they are safe, why bother with signaling? One the other hand us out there on 2 wheels need all the help we can get, making signaling way.........important. But the cop warning that Pat mentioned really is not about safety at all. But again Pat has some very good points about safety and I have rode with him and his group and look forward to it again in the future.
