Staying in toivola and did mostly off trail riding today with my 16 yo son and Packerland rider from this site. As it was getting towards evening me and my son decided to go for a trail ride. We stopped for gas in South Range and as we were heading out of town on trail 3 a friendly local guy came up to the trail and started screaming at me. I turned off my snowmobile so I could hear him. He was yelling "go back to the city you rich F@ckers, winter is over" I calmly explained I wasnt from the city, not rich, and asked if he noticed how much snow was on the ground? It really didnt matter what I said, he just kept screaming the same thing over and over. It was actually pretty funny. My son said it was the funniest thing he has ever witnessed. At any rate I didn't ask for all this snow, but if it's there I'm going to enjoy it :p

HAHAHA, boy Collin has had some interesting occurrences in his first true trip to the U.P. - watching his sled slide into the tree and now meeting one of the U.P.'s finest.

Oh, and its crazy the amount of snow pack still in the woods, winter is still indeed alive and well.

Sorry to hear how you were treated by one of the locals, we've been treating like that and we live here. We are now locals up here and almost everyday someone comes in and gives us crap about the snow. We have no control of the snow, but it is starting to take its toll on most of us. This is the middle of April and the weather men are talking about another snow storm on its way. Just try to remember, we are waiting to go 4 wheeling, swimming, and golfing - maybe by mid-June we will be able to do some of this. LOL Don and Donna

Louie, we live in a time of non-sharing. MY property stay off....barb fence to let everyone know that this is MINE and NOT yours.

Fact is that most folks driving a sled pass thru and a week later there is zero evidence that they were ever there. But it is the THOUGHT that someone went over MY driveway, and MY field, and MY forest land and therefore it is intrusive to them mentally. How dare you do that....when in reality it is a reflection of their human spirit and sharing this place we call home.

We share NOTHING....we won't stop to help anyone stranded on the road, and we would never think of helping someone just because it is obvious that they need help...setting a wall, shoveling a drive, fixing a flat...on and on.

While there are those who do leave a trail of destruction wherever they go (beer cans, fire-pits, oil cans, etc), most don't and harm nothing. Be curious to everyone but remember that the land is MINE....not yours and you can't go there because it is MINE!

Sad commentary of our current society...150 years ago, someone walking across someone elses place didn't stir a stump, and would prompt an invitation for a cup of coffee.

I own up north property and I don't fence it, nor do I post it and people walk and ride over it all the time....big deal...so what and glad they got to see what I experience when I go there.

This is sort of the glass is half empty, half full....

Let the blasting begin!

Funny how quick everyone forgets the past, actually what everyone is forgetting is this was normal in the days I grew up here, our 1st snow fall was usually Halloween, forget the cool costumes we wore snow suits and boots, then it would usually melt, then the next dump would be for deer season. All the hunters wanted was snow for tracking, but many times there would be a dumping and many couldn.t get to camp and the deer would move to the deer yards. It was always a white Christmas and feet after feet of snow would come , then in March the good old Saint Patrick Day storms would come so April was a given , we would ride at least till the 3rd weekend , if we were lucky we would get a few inches and be able to ride the 1st. week in May , what we called spring riding in T shirts nd tech vests, with temps in the 50's and a snow tail behind you, it was like jet skiing on snow!, This could be tge year, we went out yesterday, did the Freda loop to the Dam on hit the woods, trails were like it was Jan. wood were to! There is still riding to be had, and spring riding is around the corner.

Sorry to hear you were yelled at. I can understand some of the locals up there are sick of winter, but yelling at someone who is enjoying it is not going to make the snow go away LOL. This is just karma for everyone who LIKED the snow being gone by mid March last year. :D

Go to the local eating establishment, sit down and then explain to the owner that there is a man in town telling tourist/snowmobilers to go home. See how well that goes over.

HEIKKI LUNTA
SORRY LOCAL'S!

http://csumc.wisc.edu/exhibit/HeikkiLunta/culture/lyrics.html

The Heikki Lunta Snow Dance Song
Written by David Riutta
(P) 1970 WMPL Radio
Hancock, Michigan
Here it is, ladies and gentlemen! The original “Heikki Lunta Snow Dance Song!”
Now I’ll sing my song
To make the snow come down
And I’ll do my snow dance
Whoops! I almost lost my pants
I’ll holler and yell,
And really give it---
It’s Heikki’s snow dance song,
Heikki’s snow dance song
We gotta have some snow by the 4th of December
“Heikki Lunta, make it snow!” say all the Range Club members
The races are only three weeks away
And if I don’t make it snow, I’ll go back to making hay
It’s Heikki Lunta’s snow dance song,
Heikki Lunta’s snow dance song.
Snow, snow, snow!
Now I’ll dance some more,
And I’ll really know the score
How to make it snow,
Come on, man, go, go, go!
Don’t even slow down
till the snow starts falling down
It’s Heikki Lunta’s snow dance song,
Heikki Lunta’s snow dance song.
Snow, snow, come on, snow!

SCOTTIKING OUT!

I'm sure there are many that are sick of the snow up there and are getting cabin fever. But, to take out on somebody putting through town enjoying the snow... well, lets just say he appeared to be a few cards short of a full deck. It'll be a lasting memory thats for sure!

Lori, saw you and Dave heading South on the trail past D's Base Camp Sunday afternoon. Can't miss those sleds!

Why does snow = cabin fever. If you are not out enjoying what Mother Nature has to offer MOVE away.

Sounds like this guy is a local nut job or was well in to a day of steady drinking. Who knows. Pretty funny if you ask me.

As far as sharing land...... If there was such a thing as respect it would not be an issue. It is the riding over cars buried in snow, running over new saplings you planted, riding right up to your house in the middle of the night when kids are sleeping..... I could go on and on. It just come down to common sense and respect. Two thinkgs most dont have any more.

Sorry but you aren't officially a local just because you are a resident or reside in the area. One way you become a local is when you've been here so long that nobody remembers when you moved here....it's like you've always lived here and then you're a local. You can measure your status starting with children who were too young to remember when you arrived...they'll think you are a local because you've always been here since they could remember. A much more difficult rite of passage is to have
such similar personality traits, values, lifestyle, that people assume you must be a local. Non locals don't really know who is and who isn't but even they can sometimes tell
if you have foreign qualities. Those who have lived their entire life here will spot you right away but if you're a genuine good person you'll be accepted and loved by them!
No counterfeits please! The U.P. is in constant transition. At one time, there were only "outsiders" coming to the area, now there are newcomers.... if you are respectful of the local culture, they may say "Welcome"!! (This opinion is based solely on my observations and not intended to reflect the opinion of any other persons in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan)
