I am a out state member. I belong to a club in Wi,Il,Iowa. I have two sled reg in Wi. I spend from 2-4 weeks in Wi and Minn every year. I put a $50 bill in trail box for every week that I ride in area. I have noticed that trail box's have mostly $1.00 bills very few $5 or Tens. Do you stop to think what it cost for fuel in a groomer a day?

and that's great...but how about giving us guys who have brushed and marked lakes, and trails our stickers free!!!

Our club pays the membership of the club officers (Pres, VP, etc.) and our 2 main groomer operators. Maybe we'll be able to expand this to members putting in a certain level of work if this bill passes and our membership increases significantly. Time will tell.

Let me guesshow u vote

Just saying that I make one trip a year to the UP and don't let the multiple $45 stickers change that. I like to go to UP in March when WI snow is gone. I always thought this money went to keep these trails. Whats your guess???????

I will know over the past 23 years...I have done my fair share of "volunteer work" for these clubs...a heck of a lot more than 15 hours a year... (thats two days of work only)....sure...join a club, and get the discount...but how about giving an even bigger incentive to work the trails (brushing signing...etc)...and the groomer operator's should get their passes paid for by the clubs too...just saying...help the guys who help all of you ride....I realize some of you are from out of state and it's hard for you to come volunteer...so you will pay a little extra...it is what it is.

Very good point... However, when do you "draw the line" on who gets the free ticket??? If your own club wants to reward the very active members that is fine. My club pays the annual $10 AWSC fee for the pres., v-p, treasurer, and secretary. Just don't expect to have the state of WI to come up with something that would be so vague.
Hopefully those who are active club members understand that statewide WI clubs are almost $2,000,000 short of funds each year! This is why something needs to change.

As an Illinois resident I always register my sleds in Wisconsin, it will be a cold day in He#@ before I voluntary give Illinois any more of my money for nothing. Biggest $%@#% state in the union, ok rant over.
The writing is obvious, join a club and register in WI is what they want or pay $50. I really don't have a problem with this.

I feel the same way, send money to register in Illinois and Madigan and company will clean it out for some other purpose.

An increase in the non-resident trail pass fee from current $35/year to $50/year to is going to be expensive for the family with multiple sleds for trail permits with MI at $45 per sled I don't know how this will shake out cost wise for them? My gut feel is choices will be made to stay in WI or MI no border hopping for the casual use family. Pay to play choice.

Yup...as I only ride wisco very seldom with multiples..I'm prob done with wisco..MI could be 100 and I'd pay it because I ride at least 10 days..so maybe pushing outsiders out is the goal..then it will have succeeded

The CAP/STEP has been passed by the Assembly, now onto the Senate.

Also, one thing that I found interesting. There now is a 4 year "sunset clause" with this. When passed, after 4 years the program will be re-evaluated.

I think this has been the case for a while. When Michigan upped there price many like myself stopped going from wi into mi. I have no problem paying the trail pass if I am going to be in mi for a trip but note going to pay to go ride up there for lunch and back into wi. And like you said now people may not leave mi to ride to the northern wi towns for lunch/dinner and back into mi. Time will tell

If you do not own property in Wi you can NOT register sleds there , you must buy pass's as out of state .. 4 of my friends all registered there sleds to my cabin , and all 4 just got tickets for it, and I got ripped on by the Wi DNR officer for letting them do that & a ticket . And I had to show my property tax bill to get out of my ticket . So all be careful who think they can get around the reg out of state fee's .. No reason now to register the sled in WI , you just pay even more ..

Thanks for the heads-up. That's what we've always done - registered the sled in Wisconsin so we can ride there, and then buy the Michigan trail pass. My regular group lives in IL and IN, and we never ride in those states. I do have some extended family in Wisconsin.

So here we go again, guys are willing to pay 90 bucks for a Klim hat. 50 bucks for OEM oil, 12K plus for a sled, 180 for oem belt, but that extra 15 for the trail permit will keep them from riding. As a WI resident Id be fine if the permit for Non Res Went to 100. So many places sledders get ripped off but we always focus on the wrong one. I know I know not everyone pays all that but 3-5 less Starbucks coffees a year and you are all set. All that being said I have always said there should be a special cost for those that are landowners but not residents, for sleds and hunting. At least a discount for the landowner. Ive got buddies that pay 5 times what I do in property taxes but they are NOT residents

All my IL buds registered sleds in WI & I don't remember a Wi address being needed but that was 4-5 years ago & they all came up with stickers in hand. When I registered my Apex XTX this year the WI website had totally changed. You will have to ask IL or IN people if still dobable without WI address?

I fully understand the frustration with some over the extra money. Coming from Illinois with four sleds is an expensive weekend. But the trails are the best and that does not come free. Hats off to the volunteers also. I should have joined a club long ago but I will now. I look at it this way. When boating in the summer it costs me $750 a year to belong to a boat club with dock and electric. A seventy mile run down river and back for the weekend will be $400 in fuel. Beer, food and other another couple of hundred. Boats are expensive to maintain also. So if we want to play we will have to pay. My only concern is how much of the new fees are swallowed up in administrative costs.

Yes but the frustration is for us multiple state riders..I have multiple sleds and I ride(rode) in 3 states...once it gets this high its not worth it to ride another state...won't get rid of mn or mi...so gotta decide if the one possible weekend in with is worth it..prob not..just go north shore or push on UP..its a shame cuz I rode hayfield first time this year..dropped 3 $35,tags..for just 3,days...mentally can't justify 150 for it on top of...50 gal oil..150 belt..4$ gal gas..12k sled...food lodging etc as earlier poster said..works both ways

You can justify paying $50 for oil but not justify the need to raise the trail passes? Something is wrong with your thinking. The reasons there is a need to raise the pass is the same argument, $4 diesel, higher oil and maintenance costs, etc. It just flat out needs to be done. Our grooming hours are used up for the year, there is the most snow we have had all year on the ground now and supplemental is going to be in the 20-30% range. There just needs to be more money in the system. Buy cheaper oil, use the money to buy the trail pass. Problem solved! You obviously make a good living and must be intelligent to do so. There are ways you could cut costs to find the money to buy the pass, just saying.

Your friends should NOT have lied and used your address. It is perfectly legal to register your sled in Wisconsin if you live out of state. The following is from the DNR website.

Nonresident Snowmobile/ATV/UTV Trail Pass

Wisconsin law requires those who use Wisconsin snowmobile, ATV or UTV trails to display either Wisconsin registration or a Nonresident Trail Pass. Funds from this program will be designated for use as trail aids and related costs to enhance all of Wisconsin's snowmobile, ATV and UTV recreation. If the snowmobile, ATV, or UTV is kept in Wisconsin it must be registered in the State of Wisconsin. Nonresident customers choosing to register their ATV or snowmobile in Wisconsin will be liable to the Department of Revenue for sales tax on the purchase of the machine.
