What Ground is Legal?

I get the secret spot thing, really I do. I kind of relate it to the secret perch spawning area I know about; and I don't want 20 boats ruining it so I'm not telling ya.

But what is legal to explore off trailing Michigan? All state ground? Federal ground? All non-plowed roads?

Pretty much any state or federal ground other than that designated as a "wilderness area".........pi$$es me off real good and proper that some guys still insist on riding in these areas, even including some buds of mine......which I give them Holy H*LL every time they do.........

Edit: Oh, I forgot about roads.......at least in my county (Alger) any roads are legal other than M-28 and M-94 and even those are legal as long as you're not on the actual right of way..........but it is legal to go on them to cross a bridge etc.......

Thank You! Now, to target these spots, How do you get to them? Plat book? Is a GPS?

It real obvious that sleds and ATVs are not allowed in the wilderness areas (elk ares in the lower). But outside of the signs every other foot, are these marked on maps?

Search online maps.......I was looking at one the other day for the central U.P. and it had different colors for state, federal, and private ground.......wilderness areas were cross-hatched in bold red......for the life of me I can't remember what site though.......sorry..........

I use my GPS and it works great. It shows the state and federal lands so you know where you are at. The private lands are there too just a different color. Good luck.

You can buy maps at dnr headquarters also. They were free when i went in and got some, the whole ottawa what was legal and not. This includes all forest roads and forest highways. That was a couple years ago, they are giant maps.

Its a quigmire of interpination of colours on a map and gps coordinates, but county unploweed seasonal roads are a good start that dont show on a map or gps

Only issue I see is a lot of the old two track logging roads now either cross private property or are all on private property now.

THere is an old logging road on map across my property that has not been open since the 1930's - People using gps follow it all the time. After logging its funny to see the carnage where sleds ride in to stump piles and get stuck and what not. Pieces of sleds left behind. Giant ruts where you can see they spent some time out there trying to dig out.

Wonder if there is a way to get roads that are not there any more removed from maps. Sure would be nice for both sides.

Haha I ran into this a lot this past summer out to the east of you snocrazy, most notably not realizing both the Walsh and the Driggs are not in fact through roads despite showing up on the paper maps as well as on Google/Mapquest.... Ahhh good times. There were certainly a couple times in which I ran into people out on some poorer forest roads who were asking for trouble being out there in the types of vehicles they were (and then some not realizing where they were). Sort of scary to think about when you consider the lack of any population density and cell phone service... But I digress.
