Keweenaw Snowmobile Club Sauna Raffle 2017!

The Sauna is making its rounds throughout the Keweenaw, you can stop by M&M Powersports in Hancock,Mi to check it out and purchase raffle tickets for your chance to win! These saunas are really nice, made right here in the UP. The sauna will be making its rounds to other stops in the near future such as at the Mosquito Inn (Toivola, Mi)and the kickoff of the The Copper Dog 150 (Calumet, Mi). Other spots TBD and will be announced. The sauna was coordinated in part with www.keweenawsaunas.com

This is a fundraiser for the Keweenaw Snowmobile Club, this team does such a great job with the trails in the keweenaw, and has an absolute Top Notch grooming crew to say the least; This Club is truly passionate about snowmobiling in the Keweenaw! Awesome Trails!! All of your support is greatly appreciated, it goes a long way to help support the efforts of the club to continue to provide a top notch trail system!

I got invited to a sowna by a local at hoppys. I didn't under stand the concept . Guess I need to expand my horizons.

Nyt päähän sattuu! (My hed Hertz!) :dejection: Duh!

In one respect, at least that's reasonably close to a proper phonetic spelling, if that's what you intended, definitely better than "sawna". :indecisiveness:

snobuilder: I hope that "barrel sauna" (or whichever one you first experience) works like the traditional (click →) Finnish "log cabin sauna" of my experience (read the whole article as well).

… where you heitä kauhalla vettä kiukaalle … (throw a ladle of water on the sauna stove rocks …) … ja nauttia lyhyen kosteutusjakso … (… and enjoy the short burst of steam …) until the moisture dissipates, leaving a dry heat. And also whup yourself with a vihta (a bunch of wet birch — or often cedar in da UP — boughs) to stimulate the circulation.

Then a quick dash for a quick dip in the lake (or a snowbank); or even better, a Polar bear dive, like this: (click →) Heikinpäivä Polar Bear Dive (2012). (My problem with that would be walking on that frozen lake surface from the sauna to the swimmin' hole with bare feet; something like sticking your tongue on that ol' flagpole?)
Of course having spent many if not most of my summer vacations at the family dairy farm in Bruce Crossing, I had many occasions to "go sauna" — a Saturday evening ritual.
However lacking a convenient adjacent lake, it wasn't until my days at MTU, when on at least one occasion I took a running jump into ol' Lake Superior right from da sauna at Mike Fasana's (former proprietor of the ol' Mike's Bar, now the (click →) Pilgrim River Steak House) place at "Pikku Amerika" (a.k.a. "Little America,") on the Stanton Twp. shore (from Schmidt's Corner via Liminga Rd./N. Superior Rd./CR 61B/Little America Rd. to da Lake).

Ahhh, refreshing! — But no, not cold! — At least not while wearing what felt like a ¼" insulating layer of superheated sauna glow[SUP]1[/SUP]! "Superior, the lake refreshing!" (Sounds like a Hamms Beer commercial, eh?) :wink:
[SUP]1[/SUP] How is that possible? It's called the (click →) Leidenfrost effect, in which the frosty cold lake in near contact with the hot surface of your body produces an insulating vapor layer that actually does keep the chill away. At least for several minutes, until your body reaches a significantly lower temperature.

Come to think of it, how many more years is it going to be before that John Dee fella builds a proper "log cabin sauna" at his place? After 17 years in da UP, that's the sole remaining step before he can be duly certified as a "Yooper"! :encouragement:

Sounds like the online option is in process, hopefully more to come on that soon!

The Sauna will be making its way to the Vintage Snowmobile Ride in Copper Harbor Saturday 2-18-17, raffle tickets will be available for purchase! Hope to see everyone there, the Vintage ride is a great event!!
