almost a guarantee this gets posted every year. lol

when the shipping canal closes.

YES you can still cross it on the grates (theres even a video floating around - and unless something is going on that I am not aware of).

In the past from what I remember the mat goes down around just after xmas.

I’ve crossed the bridge plenty of times with no mat down and it’s just fine. I always cross at a slow pace and have no trouble. I have seen people ticketed for crossing the canal so I don’t know if I would do that. There are spots on that canal that don’t freeze very well especially down by the bridge. I personally don’t like crossing water unless it’s a marked trail and absolutely necessary but that’s just me.

Maybe its because you are on a posted trail then cutting through a park that is not the trail.

IDK never thought about it just hit the hammer and crossed headed for M&M. We never crossed the the canal before so I was concerned about our shoreline approach and ended up on the other side of the bridge for level off ramp and had sight of M&M. I do believe we hopped some curbs along the way to Chad's.

I not really sure either, maybe it is because it’s not a marked trail. I have crossed the canal plenty but not in the last 10-12 years. But last season I was riding on the trail and saw officers out on the side of canal writing tickets to people who crossed. If I remember correctly they even had signs posted not to cross. They always have a few sled that go thru the ice, maybe want to avoid that in the future. Someone who lives up in the area probably has better information.

The fishcops or whoever like to hang out there and hassle some folks . I never get hassled with my Fu Man Chu.

There are plenty of signs posted. There are also plenty of tracks right past the signs. I can see why non sledders would hate some of us. It is almost like we can't read. I figure that if someone posted a sign, there is a reason. I read them and obey. I know it seems silly, but I'm trying to preserve our trails.
BTW, it is almost a non issue to cross before the mat. Carbides have never been a problem. I do lift newer hook scratchers before crossing because they do catch some obstacles at lower speeds.

Yea , I think there was a couple in a fat bike topped Subaru sitting there waiting to get offended and giving up the stinkeye last time we crossed the ice.
