Maybe it was the back up from the MI DNR stings that recently occurred? I received the following in an email from the MI DNR letting us know they are out and about..

Applause to MDNR ! Keep going and thank you for your service.

On Jan. 12, conservation officers continued their group snowmobile patrol in Bergland, addressing sound violations and riders operating while intoxicated. Again, more than 200 snowmobilers were contacted by conservation officers.

“Three snowmobilers were arrested for operating a snowmobile while under the influence and lodged in the Ontonagon County Jail,” Pomroy said. “Ten tickets were written, including one to a snowmobiler whose sled exceeded the sound limit, three tickets were also issued for registration and trail permit violations.”

I pity the fool who has to go see the "Magistrate" in Bessemer, worse than People's court.

Know from experience there Frank?

I rented a sled from Headwaters in Watersmeet that did not display a MI trail sticker in 2007 and our group was pulled over in front of DNR in Watersmeet on trail 2. DNR fella said I get the ticket as it was my responsibility not Dealer.
Anyway, went to see the "Madge" and found out it was a position with less education than I and was sad to see the "Valkenvania" style of justice present and had to pay the fine.
Nuff said except MI is way behind WI in the spectacle known as the Court system.

They will be all around Lake Gogebic at night now but if it works who cares.

Local businesses care as word spreads and it keeps people away. They always seem to set up in this area when they do. Granted, they don't do it often, but move it around a bit.

Why would anyone be scared of a DNR checkpoint? Constitutional issues aside (which is a thing, granted) you need just five common sense things to be sent on your way in just a minute or two:

-Valid registration (meh...)
-Valid insurance (protection of yourself and others)
-Valid trail sticker (trail funding)
-Stock or stock-quiet exhaust (trail conservation)
-Little to no alcohol in your system (common sense safety)

Whoop-tee-do!

If I knew of a riding area where it was known the above was adhered to, it would actually make me WANT to go THERE, not elsewhere.

An overbearing government pisses everyone off, but when it is health/safety/liability/funding/trail conservation stuff then more power to them for kicking the sled trolls in the nuts.

in Michigan a snowmobiler has the same limits as driving an automobile. the worst offense is OWI, "operating while impaired" and the BAC limit is.08. however there is the OWVI "operating while visibly impaired". this is subjective and each officer may interpret it differently if they feel for instance you don't "pass" a field sobriety check. if they smell alcohol (probable cause) from a single drink they could have you do a filed sobriety check. you slur your speech, or show any sign that is interpreted by the officer as under the influence they can charge you with OWVI. i'm not saying every officer would or wants to be a jerk, but it happens.

Thanks. I hear all that. The OWVI deal could be very costly. I don't consume when I will be driving as I have a CDL. I have never tarnished it, and don't intend to.
