Participation is going to drop like a rock soon due to Spring either the site self corrects with less traffic or members will drift away as seasonal interests change and difficulty getting on the site just makes it more difficult to stay in touch.

I don't understand why we can connect with other parts of the forum but not the Discussion board. BTW, I'm seven generations past this computer stuff. My oldest son, a computer whiz, would get mad at me when I would call him about a computer issue. I would just say "I don't understand." You hear the impatience on the other end of the fone. Finally I asked him if he could read or understand Greek or Hebrew. His answer was, "no." I promptly responded, "That's computer language for me." Nuff said. All is well with our conversations now.

The Discussion board is actually a separate website (johndeeforum.com) from the primary website (johndee.com) whereas the other features are contained within the primary website. You can actually access the Discussion board without going through the main website but when you click on the “enter” button on the main website it simply connects you to the forum website via a link to the website. This is why you can have issues with one and not the other.

While Chiefcheese is probably not inclined to speculate, I’d be curious to hear his take on the situation.

Client/Server systems were not my area of software expertise but I do know server software can be designed to allow essentially unlimited connections. This is typically not done because hardware is the real limiting factor so limits are placed on the number of connections the software will allow. This prevents the hardware from being overwhelmed with processing requests but also may lock out someone trying to access the site.

This being said, I’m not familiar with the server system John set up but I suspect it was designed to handle far bigger loads than I typically see accessing the site. Servers do fail or sometimes need rebooting, which may degrade capability and I suppose this is a possibility.

There also may be clients (possibly data mining robots or malicious software) that are sucking up connection processing time by making crazy numbers of requests (say, emulating thousands of mouse clicks in seconds). The Discussion board is tied to a database where all the information is stored and accessing this takes processing time and memory.

It's interesting that more and more websites are adopting a “robot check” before they will allow you to access the website. Sometimes you have to respond but with others, it is able to determine that you are legit without any input from the user.

It does seem suspicious that the accessibility issues seem to have increased with the proliferation of ads. I’m not sure of the mechanism by which the browser pumps these ads into the website so I don’t know if they produce additional load on the system.

I have to believe that a trained IT professional could collect data and determine the real source of the issue, given access to the system.

Bottom line is that, as Whitedust said, people will eventually drift away from the website in frustration unless some changes are made, which would be a sad thing.

Remember that guy, I think without the owner of the site wanting to clean things up it's not going to get done, do disrespect to Nora. I think this summer will be telling if this forum will make it to next year. I'll try my best to do my part.....

Interesting stuff. My last foray into computers was with Cray when they got bought out by Silicon Graphics in the mid 90’s. I followed the scientists explanation of using servers and arrays of PCs to harness computing better than the Cray Computers (some sort of theory of it is faster traveling around a cube vs diagonally). I followed their discussion for almost 3 mins, which was 2 mins and 59 seconds more than my peers! They later explained what is now the cloud and the timing of launching 386, 486 and “handheld” computers…
