i think he is up at his cabin burning boat gas and drinking beer

Good call, two for two. Oh, and a little fishing from time to time.

I apologize if I missed it but anything up and coming for a new resto project? potentials?
Thanks for asking and nope, you haven't missed anything.

The Cyclone/“Liquidator Pretender” project last year was a lot of fun and I really liked how it came out so I figured that would be a good place to wrap up my major vintage project threads.

I do have some unfinished vintage sled work that will keep me in the shop quite a bit once the geese decide to head south. What I’m arguing with myself about now is whether or not this work is interesting enough and/or challenging enough to publicly document in any detail or if I should just skip to the finished product.

I have some time to mull it over and if I could come up with an angle that will amp up the project interest level a little, it might be thread-worthy. I have already given it a little thought and have some ideas. Suppose I should really try to keep the string going for one more year.

I think what you're looking for is "drama" to hold the interest. Much like the Reality Shows on TV. Consider what's being said when the parts don't fit together? Old Riding Buddies show up and some tools go missing! Get the idea?

Heck, if it works, sell it to a network and call it Survivor On Kelly's Island!

I have always liked following your projects. Big or small, matters not to me as the things you do are done right & is interesting to follow. I realize that it all takes extra time & understand if you didn't want to get that involved with it. Needless to say, you would have a good following regardless.

You guys sure know how to poke the bear….but in a good way.

I had to make a trip to the house tonight and your questions/comments motivated me to go out to the shop and assess the situation. I looked at what might be possible and what might not, potential parts issues, and possible dead ends. A plan is clearer but still a little fuzzy but after all, it’s still July.

Even though Gary had a novel suggestion, I don’t think the reality thing would really work. If I were to do a weekly video program of my shop antics, it could never pass for a reality show. No doubt, many of you would be saying to yourself: “No one could be stupid enough to do what he just did, it has to be scripted.”

I’m kind of fired up about getting something together so thank you all for the jump start that I needed.

Im sure there are many of us on this site who may not post or remark on your projects that are following and watching closely in awe, not to mention Im willing to bet there are probably equally as many guests to this site who chime in and follow you and your progress. I also bet there are many of us who watch and wish we could do that, or maybe bring back vintage memories of sleds we once had that you are now restoring. I don't think It would matter how big or small the project i'm sure there are and will be many who will religiously follow your posts, waiting for what's next. I've said it before that I think you are a real master at your craft! and am looking forward to more of your projects if you so choose to continue, if not, I want to thank you for the projects and your time you shared with us until now.

Instead of the reality thing or "vintage chat" what about creating another heading of your own and call it "kelly's Corner" or "Kellys projects" wouldn't have to be "reality", post what you want, when you want and if you want. Big project or small you could have your own place to put it up, just thinking out loud

This is a really excellent point.

I never think of the vintage sledding side of the sport as living in the past but rather, as reminding us of the memories we have of our early sledding years and equally important, preserving the history of a unique period of time that really was the foundation that has kept a lot of us riding sleds for many decades.

In my younger years I rebuilt and/or owned a number of muscle cars (most of which I wish I still had) but family needs came first so the cars had to go. At this point I don’t have the funds or the ambition to go back to cars. It’s just not realistic.

This is where the vintage sleds have filled that void. I guess it’s no secret that I gravitate towards the higher performance production sleds of the day, which I view as the muscle sleds of the era. As it was with the muscle cars, these sleds had decent power out of showroom but the power, handling, and ride pales by comparison with modern models. But I when I hop on any one of mine, grab the bars and a handful of throttle, none of that seems to matter.

When I say performance production sleds I’m not talking about the sleds that were purpose-built for competition but were something that you could find at almost any small-town dealer, many for which snowmobiles were a sideline business. In my hometown, the Chaparral showroom was in a bait shop.

Since there is almost zero interest in vintage sleds in my area, this site is really my main outlet for discussions with people that share my interest and while I’m humbled by the idea, I think it would be pretty scary for me and probably for the JD membership.

I’m hoping for a good vintage winter and as things come up, I will try to create an appropriate thread. I can say that I’m already booked in at the Boondocks Inn in Toivola for their vintage event at the end of Feb. This is a very cool event and I’d like to do a better job of covering it here next year. Maybe I can get a photo with some of you yahoos if you happen to be passing through.

Just dropped off my sled by Paul for the vintage ride in February, 1997 Polaris Trail Indy Deluxe Touring, not real old but looking forward to spending time with the vintage group again!
