    1996 Polaris RXL.

It's little details like the decals that really make a build stand out. I used to poke a little fun at eBay but now I can't believe how much stuff I've bought off the site. In fact, just today a secondary showed up at the house.

    1996 Polaris RXL.

YES! I think a lot of people on here can relate to the wedge sleds and they will follow this build closely whether they comment or not. I’ve only ever seen one RXL in person. A buddy of my brother had one and I remember it being pretty fast and could run with the later XLT and Ultra models...

What are you most excited for?

Awesome sled! You certainly work some magic with those 90’s sleds. That 650 of yours is better than showroom. Like seeing things get built and then put to the test. It will be a memory making trip. You really should have a thread in the Vintage section on this build. It would be great to follow...

    Fear the Deere

Yeah, I’m thinking he corkscrewed on one or more jumps and landed with all the weight on a single rail tip. These sleds are tail heavy to begin with and when you add rider weight that’s a lot of force. Even after repairing the suspension, I became increasingly suspicious that the entire chassis...

    Fear the Deere

Thought I’d slip in a quick post, really looking forward to photos of Euphoric1’s Evinrude photos. Hope he is able to upload some. I dug out a couple of old archived photos of what I discovered with the suspension when I got the Cyclone home. The guy I bought it from confessed that he used to...

    Old Evinrude

Very nice! Will make a nice showpiece for the tiki hut (unless you end up using it for fishing).

    Have you noticed?

Well, I’m 75 years old so believe me, I’m very familiar with shrinkage :D. I guess companies feel that they’ve pushed the price of their product as high as will sell and now have to eliminate and downsize to maintain price. Pretty disappointing for a guy that used to buy a 1/8 lb Big Time candy...

    It's 2024, Let's Fish!

Love the bluegills and sunnies. Never caught any in Lake of the Woods but we used to get them when we fished the St. Croix river east of the Twin Cities. Nothing more fun than stumbling onto a school of hungry bluegills.

    Fear the Deere

Thanks for posts Heckler and Gary. You know I love this stuff! The 340/S was a preview of things to come but I think 76 was really the breakout year for Deere. I always liked the 76 design but until I picked up the Cyclone, I didn’t appreciate how much fun they are to ride. Some would say it’s...

One of these years I need to do this, hard to turn down a free beer.

    Your Drinking Buddy

We should get together and drink alone sometime, although as George Thorogood says: "When I drink alone, I prefer to be by myself."

I’m glad you guys are on board with one more of my vintage sled projects. I hope Gary is right and it is done by the time that winter gets serious. I think this is the first “down to the studs” project where I started with a sled that was complete and actually ran. Having said this, any of you...

    Hay Days

I saw this on the internet so it must be true. It was a post saying that Polaris is going to unveil three retro inspired sled looks at Hay Days. It could be fake but the photo I saw was a black Switchback Assault with XLT graphics. If it’s true, it looked pretty sharp. You guys will have to...

    Fear the Deere

I hope you ‘all are up for one more vintage go-around. I’m probably pushing my luck on whether I can finish this project but what the heck? I guess the worst that can happen is that I don’t get it done and I spend my last years in shame. I originally thought the title of this thread should be...

    It's 2024, Let's Fish!

We had storms Friday and Saturday night the weekend we fished. It seemed to kind of shut them down on Saturday but on Sunday (the day these photos were taken) they showed a lot more interest. Overall, this has been a consistently solid summer of fishing. Based on the weather the last couple of...

    Polaris Mutt Mod

Get on it man! A restored wedge sled is a thing of beauty. There’s a reason these sleds have a huge following. I assume yours has a white hood. Loved the look of that sled.

Those VES 500’s were overachievers’ and the sleds rode and handled surprisingly well. There are sections of trail with a lot of tight corners where I’d still rather be on this chassis than my later models. While an obvious goal of the manufacturers is to attract new people to snowmobiling, I...

    Polaris Mutt Mod

I agree. I have a friend that starts his 79 El Tigre a couple of times a summer just to fill his garage with Klotz. Back in 2000 I snow checked a brand new 500 version of this 45th Anniversary model. Wickedly fast 500. Had it for several years and eventually sold it to Elf. He used it as a...
