First flakes in UP this week?

I know John mentioned in his journal that the UP could see some flakes this week. Looks like Accuweather agrees with him as well (brief story on UP snow): http://www.accuweather.com/blogs/news/story/54973/first-snowflakes-of-the-season.asp

Touch of autumn: 36F in Embarrass, MN this morning

Now that we're in August, I really notice how much shorter the days are than they were in late June and early July. The evening shadows are getting long and yesterday and this morning there was a touch of fall in the air. I really get giddy once we get to fall. This morning: 36F in...

Effect of climate warming on Lake Superior

I thought this was an interesting article, talking more about how the warming climate may affect not only the lake, but the people that live near it. http://www.wbez.org/frontandcenter/2011-07-13/climate-change-hits-mightiest-great-lakes-89058#

    Calculation of 30-year climate normals

Hi John. I see that NOAA released the new 1981-2010 climate normals this month. So, as I understand, the new normals will use a data period from 1981 to 2010, replacing the old period of 1971-2000. I understand that we want a large enough data set to give a realistic climate "normal," thus...

Current snow depth in Sierra Nevadas...is this accurate?

Hi John. I hope you're feeling better. I'm not sure you're up to answer questions at this point, but I thought I'd post it here in case you or anyone else has thoughts. This site shows that a reporting station in the Sierra Nevadas a bit south of Lake Tahoe has a current snow depth of 276"...

Has anyone been to the Summerwind Mansion site in Land O' Lakes, WI?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Summerwind All this Paulding Light talk got me to thinking again about the mansion. Looks like a great place to visit, but I believe it is private property? Has anyone been there? Lots of fun stuff on google.

Suggestions for things to do in UP (Ironwood to Copper Harbor) for August honeymoon

Hi. My fiance and I are honeymooning August 20-23 at the Dapple Grey B&B in Copper Harbor. We're driving from Duluth and will be taking our lazy old time getting to the B&B. Do you have any suggestions on sights to see/things to do in the UP between Ironwood/Hurley and Copper Harbor? We are...

August 8, 1882 snowstorm on Lake Michigan. Any place to confirm this?

Hi John. I found a U of MN climatology paper that list notable weather events, month-by-month. In it, they list: "August 8, 1882 snowstorm on Lake Michigan. 6 inches of slush on ship decks. Snow showers on shore." Do you know of any place to verify such information? I don't imagine there...

Planning a honeymoon to Keweenaw this summer. Where to stay?

We're thinking of spending a few days in the Keweenaw. I've never been farther north than Calumet, really, so I was thinking Copper Harbor would be nice for both of us. Any thoughts on nice places to stay, fun things to do, etc.? It would most likely be sometime in August. Thanks so much.

How does the weather get well-settled or "mixed."

Hi John. Our local on-air meteorologist was explaining the consistent temperatures across the region yesterday (temps were quite consistent from northern WI all the way into Ontario) and said that it is an indicator that the atmosphere is well mixed. How does the atmosphere become mixed like...

Warmer Lake Superior will yield more lake effect snow?

UW-Madison published an article in Nature Geoscience that states wind speeds on Lake Superior have risen about 5% per decade since 1985, possibly attributed to the rising water temperatures. If this trend continues upward, would this possibly mean more lake effect snow for the favorable...

Does water temperature affect wave height?

John, I was reading the Duluth News Tribune this morning and there was an article that stated, ".....cold winds expected to gust from 40-60 mph combined with warm lake water could create waves that could build to 15-20 feet in some areas." The way this sentence is worded, it leaves the reader...
