01 MXZ 500f Damage - fix it? sell it? fix & sell?

My brother-in-law borrowed my wife's snowmobile for our 2nd annual trip to Paradise, MI. Unfortunately while working through the trees on the property heading to the snowmobile trail, he was "surprised" by the person in front of him stopping suddenly. He swerved and hit a tree at maybe 5mph. It bent the ski (no surprise) and much to our shock, the impact passed thru the trailing arm & bent the tunnel. It also popped some of the rivets in the support brackets behind the footrest connected to the trailing arm.

Apparently this is a relatively common thing for these machines. But at this point I'm torn on what to do next. My bro-in-law has offered to pay to have it repaired or simply give me the equivalent cash and I do "whatever". The wife isn't too keen on snowmobiling, so selling the machine wouldn't be a huge loss. I might just sell hers and mine and get a 2-up (probably the best way to get her on a snowmobile).

"As-is" what's this machine worth?
It has WELL under 1000 miles (probably 700ish?) 2001 MXZ 500 Fan. All stock. Very clean, hood, windshield, seat, etc. are in very good condition. Track is studded.

If I fix it up, bend the tunnel back into shape, re-rivet the supports, replace the ski and install a set of Fett Bros Sure Foot II (http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/produ...in&catId=&productId=p490134&leafCatId=&mmyId=) to reinforce and cover some of the wrinkles in the tunnel/tunnel roll. What's it worth then?

What would you do??

In great shape a 01 500 fan is probably only worth $15-1800. In that shape probably closer to $1000-1200 would be my guess. I would straighten it out and reinforse it. Don't try and hide it just make it look good. As far as brother in law offering to pay depends how you get along with him but i would make him help me fix it and make sure to rub it in a little everytime you see him. It is snowmobilin and that is how it goes sometimes. Even though he wasn't going fast he probably just caught the tree in the sweet spot that transfered all the force straight down the trailing arm.

Where are you located? I am looking for a project sled to build with and for my son. I might be intersted in it as it sits.

@dab102999 - Thanks for the feedback. Rubbing it in is a given, but I have to wait for the sting to fade, he feels really bad about it. I can sympathize, I took a borrowed year-old M6 off a small cliff in Colorado - hurt my wallet & pride way more than my body.

@jimfsr - The sled is at our cottage in Houghton Lake, MI. I'm currently home, near Columbus, OH. I think I've got my profile setup to allow a private email, let me know if it's not letting you through.

sell it to him for 1500 and let him deal with it.I also have payed fair market value for a wrecked sled.I parted it out and broke even.the one I wrecked was a 96zrt with 500mi on it.I was riding it because my brand new ultra with about 12MI on it burnt down in the arrowhead.talk about twisting the knife I still hate poo for that one

Doesn't look to bad, I think a big hammer will bring it out very close to where it is suppose to be.

If you want to keep it you could buy a new Ski or 2 new Plastic Ski's.
