My buddy had the clutch on his 03 MXZ literally explode to pieces last season after having the motor rebuilt at a skidoo dealer in the Sheboygan area. It wasnt aligned even close. Anyways, it wiped out the starter also and he bought a used clutch off ebay but it didnt come with a ring gear. Now we were talking to a more knowledgable skidoo dealer and he said you cant just get a new ring gear and bolt it on because of balance. Said you need to find a clutch with the ring gear already on it. Also said that all 03 04 05 came with the ring gear on it. I have a 05 MXZ 600 without elec start and it does NOT have a ring gear on it. So what is correct here? Can he get a new factory ring gear and bolt it on? Can it be balanced somewhere on the clutch he now has?? Any knowledgable advice is appreciated..Thanks

turn the clutch over if on the back there is holes taped with threads for the mounting of the ring gear then a person can add the ring gear. if there is no holes then drilling and taping is required, that's where the balancing of the clutch of the clutch comes into play.

Find another dealer...one that knows what they're talking about. The statement about all '03-'05 clutches coming with a ring gear is false. That didn't start until around '08 and only on the 800s, and that was for balance/harmonics reasons. You can simply buy a ring gear and bolt it onto the clutch your friend bought. All of the clutches will have the holes for the bolts there, but if it never had a ring gear on it, then the holes will need to be tapped. You can manually tap them or buy the Ski Doo thread forming bolts and just run them in.

There really should be no reason to balance the clutch, as long as it's assembled with all of the balance marks aligned.
