Have 700 that the temp light comes on only when its warmed up good and at wide open throttle. As soon as you let off the throttle the light goes off. No det sensor on the sled. It also stumbles for power while light is on. Sled does not seem to be overheating. Has anyone ever experienced this before or have any advice?

That was a thought just didn't think the light would turn off so quick as soon as out of the throttle. Originally thought a wire rubbed thru giving false overheat which limp mode caused power loss but doesn't make sense cause only when warmed up good. The water pump belt will remain a possibility. Thanks rpx7

Straight from the parts fiche for an 03 Pro X 700:

2201821

KIT-WATERPUMP BELT $42.49

That is the online price from Kens Sports in store price on one of these babies is about $50. You can go to an auto parts store and get the gates equivalent (better belt than oem from what ive heard) for $11.

Replace coolant temp sender on top of head, I just did this last week 60 miles from home. There $20 if you ride an edge you should have one in your tool kit always. Mine kept coming on but on the low side, once you got on the throttle it would go off. The sensor will retard the timing, to save from a burn down. You should also check/replace the belt with that milage, go to napa for belt its a gates with kevlar cant remember the # though.

Yep, replace the coolant temp sensor. They were known to go bad. When it acts up it puts the motor in limp mode.

Thanks everyone for your help. The temp sensor was our first attempt and no change. Sorry should have put that in original post. This is a buds sled and we do all of our own wrenching. Usually can figure things out but this one has us stumped. I'm leaning toward the belt as it is the only thing that makes some sense. We will change the belt this summer and inspect water pump. The bad thing is we have to pull motor to do this since prox has extra chasis reinforcement tight to recoil. If its apart it gets a new belt regardless. If that doesn't fix it going to put temp gauge on it to see if it is actually running warm. If not maybe ECU?

Just an update for anybody that searches for this similar situation. We clearly overlooked the obvious. The t-stat was not opening all the way. New stat, water pump belt and pistons& rings while motor was out and its ready to go for a final guys weekend in the great north.
