05' M7 141 speedo not working

My friend is looking at a used m7 with about 3000 miles on it and the speedo doesn't work. On older sleds it usually means the driveshaft bearing is shot, would this be the same problem?

Yep!

Climb under with track lifted in rear....grab the gear by that bearing and wiggle it. If it wiggles at all, it is shot. Sometimes you can see it by close examination...but it doesn't take much to break that little speedow wire and that is why they use that system...it is the first thing to go bad when the bearing is starting to go.

Personally a much beefier bearing that is sealed or easily replaced is something I have wondered about for decades. Flat out dumb design, left there to feed the repair shops.

normally that would be true. the M's use a diamond drive and more than likely the pickup
sensor for the speedo has gone bad. Happened on many of the 05's. there is a plug in by the footwell that the sensor can be unplugged and replaced from that point down to the
diamond drive, probably have to pull the drive unit out to do it.

Xcsks is right. The Ms have an electronic speedo sensor. Not like the old mechanical cables with a key that would break. Should be about a $30 fix. You will probably have to pull the diamond drive, which you should do either way to check/change the oil. The real question is how long it's been broke. If you push and hold the odometer button you can check total hours on the motor and compare to current miles. I think I'm around 4500 offtrail miles and 200 hours
