1-29-18 Trail Update (Minocqua, Lac du Flambeau)

Took a 70 mile loop to check out trails in Minocqua, and Ldf areas.

First the bad...the trails through town (in Minocqua) are trashed...snirty, icy, and rough....the Bearskin is Fair to Poor at best from Lake Minocqua to Hazelhurst..it does get a bit better the further south you go (fair condition south of hazelhurst, Poor as you get closer to Minocqua)...Roads, and parking lots are bare as well.

The good news...is once you get out of town, the trails do get better...12W, 10A, and 9N (pics below) in the forest riders trail system were excellent..10W was not as good, more snirty sugar snow, and icy corners, until you get west of squirrel lake.... Also Trail 17 (Hwy 47 railroad grade), gets decent once you get a couple miles out of woodruff, it's actually pretty good near LDF...though it does look snirty at times, I wasn't hitting rocks or burning my slides off...The spur along HWY F, and the one along Thorofare RD are excellent. The Lakes are a little rougher, and there is some slush once you get off trail....otherwise they are still decent.

Info needed

Thinking about bringing 13 year old along to ride this area this weekend any tips on where to ride and where to stay with a pool. And places to eat .thanks moo

Did a trip with my son (8) and nephew (7) a couple weeks ago. It was their first real trip on sleds (they ride circles in a local park). We stayed at The Waters in minocqua. Clean rooms, pool, waterslide, indoor/outdoor hot tub, arcade.

Where to ride is based on conditions. We rode south from minocqua in the bearskin, jumped onto lake Tomahawk, rode up to St. Germain and looped back over to minocqua. We did 85 easy miles, rode as many lakes as we could and made sure we stopped before the kids got cold.

Got back to hotel around 4, let the kids swim and play games while we enjoyed a cold one. Great easy first time trip with the kids.
