12-16-24 ONEIDA COUNTY UPDATE

Holding pattern right now....it looks awful out there...water on top of the ice, and what little snow we had melted away (I still have 1-2 inches in my back yard, but in town, it's brown and bare for the most part)....it's just a wet, dreary Monday....the good news is I had reports from local Ice fishermen, Saturday morning of 7-8 inches of ice in the bays on lake Nokomis...if we can get through today...everything should freeze back up, and we have SNOW in the forecast...looks like a dusting to 2 inches possible for today through Wednesday...and then...an Alberta Clipper hits Thursday with the potential for up to 4 inches across the Northwoods....(fingers crossed)....so we are heading the right direction at least...but just need more ice, and then some more snow....we'll see how we look come the end of the week....but even as soggy dreary as it is today....things are looking up for the end of the week

UPDATE 12-17-24.....took a pretty good hit Sunday into Monday....really sloppy....lost most of our snow...open areas are brown...only an inch or so in my shaded back yard...very depressing ....its colder today, and the surface puddles on the lake are freezing back up...supposed to get a dusting tonight....and still watching that clipper for Thursday...nobody seems to have a handle on it....pessimistic anti snow weather men say 1-3 for the Northwoods...while the optimistic weather guys are saying 2-4....the three models are all over the place....one says 1-3, ones says 2-4, and the other says 4-6 inches (I hope that model is correct, but somehow I doubt it)..it all depends on the track, and at this point they said they can't tell (need another 24 hours)...the good thing is that its going to stay cold through the weekend so we should build more ice....however the long range forecast is not looking good...in fact the opposite of what we need to possibly open the trails by new years...it's saying above average temps (in the upper 30's and low 40's), and below average precipitation, with possibly even some rain.....which is bad news...I hope they are wrong...but it's not looking very promising to open the trails on or before January 1st in Oneida County...I guess we'll see...but to say I'm getting nervous, would be an understatement (after going through last winter).

This season is toast
Open the utv trails all year long
This way the local businesses can survive another snow less winter
UMMM...NO....many of our land owners do NOT want atv/utvs on their land due to the damage they do....that's why there are very few trails in Oneida that allow utvs on them, and I don't see this changing anytime soon....it's hard enough to keep trails open for snowmobiles here....We have a bunch of FIBS (sorry I know that Illinois people get butt hurt over getting called that), and other "city folks" that keep buying up big tracks of land and shutting down trails...it's frustrating....Our town board is trying legally to keep trails open, no matter who buys the land with 100 year easements....we'll see how that works....it's getting stupid up here lately...you'd think if people moved to an area they'd adopt our way of life....NOPE...a few of this knot heads already tried changing our zoning laws, to make things harsher, and more restrictive...like where they came from....STUPID!!! Move back to the shithole you came from if that's how you want to live!!! (sorry for my rant...lol)

I agree on not letting SxS, ATV’s on snowmobile trails. The Snowmobile Clubs put in the hard work, time, door knocking, and have the relationships with land owners. To think that they can come in and piggyback on snowmobile trails is annoying. I get the fact that they are very popular but then they should go do the work and create their own trail network, most are just using CTH as a way of getting from point A to point B. They can still get to the businesses that way so they should be happy. Finding a way to please everyone is very difficult, pretty sure it can be done but snowmobiles should not be expected to share their trails with the ATV crowd even if the weather conditions are not ideal.

I'm with ya all the way with that attakman! Bravo! Send them back where they came from fast! If it was so great there, they shouldn't have left! And letting the ATV/UTV crowd on the trails this time of year, we won't have any trails for anything, or anybody to use.

I think it's too soon to be pessimistic about the whole season but the Christmas to New Year tourist rush looks unlikely.
FIBs buying up the land & closing trails is a big issue everywhere. That comes from their "Good fences make good neighbors" mentality.

Its only December 19th. I don't think the season is "toast" as it really has not even started yet. I get it that last year sucked but the year before we were riding into mid/late March. I'm nowhere ready to give up on it anywhere in the near future.

btw...this clipper is kind of a bust here in Tomahawk...maybe an inch of snow so far (as of noon), and looking at radar a large dry slot has developed....so 1-3 at best here through tomorrow morning....just LAME!!!
