1996 indy 500

The sled I have questions about is a 1996 indy 500 evolved style. The person that dropped off at my shop blew-up the original carbed motor. He then installed a fuel injected motor with carbs installed on it. The question is, will it run???? I thought that putting carbs on a fuel injusted motor will might make it run, but it will not run correctly or have any power due to fuel delivery issues and it won't have any power. I'm I right or what, looking for help. Thanx.

I thought that polaris only made a RXL (750?) that was fuel injected. I don't think polaris made any 500 cc injected sleds.

No, they had a 500 efi around '91, '92.

I don't know if reguler carbs will work or not. There might be an issue with fuel pressure.

It has a non-fuel injucted pump on it, the motor is all set up as if it was a carbed motor. I thought that the ignition timing was different and the stator. I checked the carbs and they are jetted as a 96 carbed 500 with all the setting are where they need to be. It will start, but only idles and runs good to about 2500 rpms. Once the primary engages there is no power and booges out. The other odd thind is that the tach doesn't ready correctly (very low), has to used an add on tach to get the rpm reading. Looking for ideas. thanx

Well did some research. Found that the flywheel and stator are differerent between the carb'd motor and the fuel injected motor. I think if you change these parts then a fuel injected motor can be turned into a carb'd motor and run just fine. Any opinions on this though out there????

I think you are on the right track with the ignition. If possible check on differences in clutch weights and springs. Also Driven clutch Helix and spring. Also I would have to believe the throttle cable with the oil pump actuater would be different. Certainly something to check on. Make sure your oil pump is feeding. Exhaust pipe might also be different. By the time you have to locate all these other parts it may be simpler just to go and find the right engine.

It looks as if all the parts are installed to make it a carb'd motor, just it isn't running right. The clutching is correct for a carb'd motor, along with the springs and weights. With it running it sounds like to spark/ignition isn't right, it bogs and you get fuel out of the exhaust manifold. Looking at everything, it is all at the correct settings and adjustments. I think by changing out the stator and flywheel, it might run correctly. Anyone tried this before??
