1st "Snowmobile Races"

Did you know that the very first “snowmobile” races were held in Three Lakes, WI on Jan 31, 1926? They were part of a winter carnival Three Lakes created that year! More than 200 people came to the event, which was held on Range Line Lake (at the current camp Luther property). Cy Williams designed and built a ski slide, and there was a toboggan run as well as other games. The snowmobile race was the big draw. Those “snowmobiles” were Model T Fords that they retro-fitted with skis and other modifications. Bill Neu of Three Lakes was up against Henry Hanson of Eagle River, which really became a battle of the two towns. Hansen made the mistake of not breaking in his Ford enough beforehand, as well as adding alcohol in the radiator, as it was the only form of antifreeze. He also left the top and windshield on, along with the side curtains that added considerable wind resistance. Three Lakes did not make those same mistakes. It turned out to not be a very close race, as Hanson’s Ford got too hot and had to drop out of the race early. Bill Neu of Three Lakes finished the race strong and won!

Very cool! I had read that the Model T had been retrofitted with skis for the front & track kit for the rear so postal deliveries cold be done in the winter. Our girls went to Camp Luther for a few summers, they enjoyed it, nice place. Thanks for sharing that.

We just celebrated 100 years of Eliason's first sled. Was at the expo hall during the races. They have a small museum with pics and sleds at Eliason's in Sayner. The museum isn't opened much but they have opened for groups. If you are in Sayner, stop in their hardware store and ask for Johnna, she might give you a tour. Neat sleds for sure.
