2001 Polaris electrical problem

I have a 2001, Polaris 550 Sport Touring, 2 up sled. (air cooled). When i start the sled the head lights, tail light, speedo light and handwarmers all flicker on and off. This goes on for several minutes until i ride the sled for about 15 minutes. Then everything appears to work normal. This period of intermintent power surges eventually blows the headlight out, high beams or the tail light, depending which i have turned on. If i shut it down for awhile and come back to ride, the process repeats itself. The longer it sits the longer it takes to go back to normal. I have applied dielectric grease to all the connections and plugs that i can see. My thought was to maybe start thinking about a magneto issue. If anyone has had this problem please post on this board. If anyone has any solutions or ideas to find this problem, please HELP!!!!!........Thank you.

The voltage regulator is located on the backside of the console on the right side of sled (sitting on sled). I believe on that sled the choke lever is on the right side of the console. Look on the backside under the choke cable, its mounted on the metal footrest and needs a good ground. If its blowing bulbs, it needs replacing and I use a wire brush to clean the mounting area. Here's a diagram and part number for you.

Thank you all for your help. I will try the rectifier and hope it works.

No NO!!! Don't change the "rectifier"...change the "voltage regulator" as the poster above me indicates. It's a part that costs <$20 and can be changed in ~15 minutes depending on how easy the access is to it.

Most sled repair shops will have one. No need to get one from a Polaris dealer unless you want to pay more or the dealer is close to you.
