2001 ZL 600 piston question

I was cleaning the APV valves and thought I would give the pistons a look as best I could. One looked fine the other has a few small (BB size or smaller) pieces missing from the outside edge, above the top ring. My question is this. If there is no damage to the cylinder wall can I get by with just installing new pistons and rings? Are there other parts that absolutely have to be replaced at the same time as the pistons? This scenario is also considering/hoping that there is no damage to the head.

Any input, good or bad is appreciated. Thanks

You could have some aluminum on the cylinder walls. Brush on some miratic acid to remove any aluminum on the walls, hone cylinder, replace piston and rings. Then figure out why it was running lean.

I don't think it was running lean while I've owned it. Anytime that I've pulled a plug it appears to be plenty wet. The sled has 8,000 miles on it. Could that be the problem? Just wear/fatigue?

pull it apart heck that zr is a ez pull apart like above stated if alloy on walls acid it off then toss head and jugs in the dishwasher when mama is not home get those nice clean jugs honed slap in some aftermarket pistons and run her till 10k.and if it was me I would shave 8 to 10 tho off that head some v force clean up those transfers just a tad so there is no lip to catch on when running your finger around transfers.all can be done on efi with no adjustment to box and you will give most 700s a run
