2003 Polaris XC 340 Clutching

I have 2003 Polaris XC 340 Edge that my youngest daughter drives.

It has a smaller secondary clutch (stock) on it right now.

I am wondering if I could put a regular size secondary clutch on to increase speed and snap. Of course I would have to use a different belt.

Really just wondering about the engines capability.

Any thoughts?

Does that sled have the direct drive like the older indy lites? the clutches are designed to work together, changing the diam. will no doubt cause more greif than it is worth to try. I have this problem on my golf cart. The original primary is smaller than the snowmobile clutch and motor that I put in it. The secondary is too small to let it gear out all the way with the stock belt. A longer belt let it gear out, but the clutch had to close farther to grab the belt properly, so it basically starts out in second gear. Usually not a problem as carts are geared pretty low, but when I plow with it in the winter, I put smaller tires on to get the lower gearing I need. I really don't need to plow at 36 mph anyway.

What type of top speed will it hit? My son rode a Yamaha Ovation when he was younger, 340 with a single carb and it would top 55 on a smooth trail. The Polaris is a physically bigger sled but I'm sure that engine makes more power than the old Yamaha we had. If the top end is 55-60 I would say that's about all it's going to do, not matter what the gearing.

In theory a bigger secondary would give you a lower gear ratio to start out (better acceleration) but likely not additional top end, especially if you run into ratio issues as mentioned in the other post.

It might be easier to either add one tooth or take away one tooth from the top sprocket, gearing it either for low or top end. I looked at the fiche and it appears to have a regular chaincase.....dropping down one tooth should give it a little more low-end if that's what you're looking for.....

not much you can do. Maybe like fredster said, drop one tooth on the top gear.i don't think they make slightly heavier clutch weights or slightly stiffer clutch springs for your sled.

The 2003 340 went to the full size Edge chassis (very nice!). It has all of the same drive components and is setup as other Edge sleds (I have 3 others). It just seems that the machine is really whining (working hard) at higher RPMs (maybe because I am 240 lbs?). My daughter can get the machine up to 60-65, really fast enough for her (she'd go 150 if she could).

Thanks for your input!
