2003 XC 500 Exhaust

Pick ed up a 2003 XC 500 this fall. Was just going to try to flip. Anyway, took it to a Motorsports guy to get carb gone through and front shocks rebuilt. They couldn't get it to run right. They found the Pipe from engine to silencer was rusted out beyond repair. I got a used pipe from a salvage guy. Only thing it was from an 600. The salvage guy told me its the same pipe as a 500. Put the pipe on, still doesn't run right. Seems like its running too rich. My question, are the pipes the same from a 500 to a 600 or are they different? Mechanic where I had says the 600 pipe is why I'm having issues with it. I've had 2 salvage dealers tell me it's the same pipe. Thanks in advance!!

They are different pipes. Not sure what the diff is but probably related to back pressure.

With that said I'm not sure it would make a noticable change on how your engine runs other than a minimal performance loss.

Pretty sure you have something else going on.

not trying to be a DB but if you cant rebuild a carb do not buy something with a motor to try to flip ever . you will loose 70% of the time
that said sounds like something else going on . what are you plugs looking like with this new pipe ? is it hard starting ? is it not getting full rpm? more detail is needed for sure

again what is it doing . no one can help you diagnose your issues with this limited information

Sled starts on 2nd pull when cold. Plugs look good. Calls for NGK br9es. Tried a set of 8's no difference.

Heat range of spark plug will have zero impact on engine performance.

If it's running rich it will always start good when cold and get worse as the engine warms up.

You need to find the right guy to work on it.

agreed... heat range will not affect how the engine runs, starts or performs, heat range only refers to the plugs ability to dicipate heat. a couple things to possibly look at first at the carbs...is the choke cable properly adjusted? secondly when whomever you had clean the carbs did they really clean the carbs or just spray them out, in my opinion if you aren't using an ultrasonic cleaner and removing ALL the jets and inspecting or cleaning with a jet cleaner you aren't cleaning carbs, simply blowing carb spray through the ports doesn't always do it. I believe those carbs are flat slide carburetors...correct? if it is loading up or running rich remove the float valve assembly from the carburetor check the o-ring that seals it in the carb body, should have to remove and install with some resistance if not pressurized fuel may be leaking beyond them causing to run rich (had that happen to me on a 600 classis touring) sled always started right away was a bit doggy and idle was unstable at times. lastly how many miles on the sled? have you physically removed and inspected the reeds? Just thought I'd put my 2 cents in, hopefully it will help you

No, I haven't really done too much yet. just wanted to know about the pipe. I'll tear into it one of these days. Don't get to ride it much down here anyway. Don't think it will sell very good the rest of this year. Thanks for the replies.
