2006 APEX with 11,000 miles

I found a 2006 Yami Apex with just under 11,000 miles. The sled appears to be in good physical condition with only 1 owner. However, other than some normal maintenance (maybe just oil changes), it does not look like any repairs have been done to the sled (per the owner) including nothing done with the exhaust donuts. The sled can probably be had in the $2200 to $2500 range.

What would be the typical repair shop cost for the exhaust work? Am I just asking for repair bills on this sled with 11,000 miles?

Thanks

That’s a tuff question to generalize but if owner did nothing cut and run. Those kind of miles could have a broken header pipe because donuts are toast for sure. Track is about done all shocks will need to be rebuilt and then all drive bearings as well including boggies. Carbides Agressive Snow Trackers are best or will dart all over the trail. The engine should be sound 11,000 miles is nothing for that 4 holer. If a 121 pass it up can’t hook up unless studded to the max and the 136 attack or later ltx was a better sled by far.

Just read the link no exup until 2011 but still concerned regarding header pipe that’s way to long to go with out replacement donuts. Kip and Jerry can give you exact $ numbers for donuts but will caution you pipes could be cracked as well

To test if the pipes are cracked, place a leather glove over the exhaust and if the motor dies, more than likely it is still sound. There is no way the original donuts would last that long. Most went out between 4-5K miles. The new copper donuts might last that long. Header pipes are pricey. The work is not hard, but time consuming. Kip replaced a header for me when one cracked while in the UP. I want to say with the header, new donuts and labor I was in the $450 range. But that was many years ago. If a single shot rear shock, the W arm was prone to snap. I would look closely at that. There are repairs that can be done with welding, but cost $$. The stock front bushings will be gone if they have not been replaced.

My thoughts would be, if nothing has been maintained, I would pass. There are many high mileage sleds that can be had for low money. Find one that has been taken care of. Might need to be patient, but there will be these sleds to find.

Some good info before it turns into a crap show like most HCS threads....

Read the thread. Looks like a happy ending but if a shop does the repairs they will only quote new replacement parts.
I doubt that sled had nothing done in 11,000 miles but what do I know.
As with all sleds If you don't own and turn wrenches then buy and replace the sled....any sled.... every 2-3 years depending on miles driven.

The rewards of maintaining and riding an Apex are well worth it. ALL sleds have their gremlins.

Haters will hate, Apex's are awesome machines. If you have any mechanical skills at all you can maintain a Apex very easily. I wouldn't think twice about the miles. A dealership will charge about 3 hours labor to do exhaust donuts.

YamaDonuts and driveshaft bearings not maintained last 5000 miles anything after that is borrowed time. Exhaust if cracked is a PIA to replace or repair. Enjoy eating slides and overheating in lower snow conditions...

Also enjoy carrying 80 lbs of ice in the rear of the tunnel. Flawed design. Power steering was not invented to innovate. It was designed to cover up a flawed design.

I had 5 of them. They are an abortion. So many better alternatives out there.

Don't take this as a personal attack, but more of a conversation piece. If the OP is looking for a low cost snowmobile, it is touch to argue the reliability of the Yamaha 4S motors. For the $2000-2500 range, what would you suggest?

My thoughts would be, most of us started off snowmobiling with budget sleds at one point in time. With rare exception, the Yamaha motors will be good. For me, I would need to see if EVERYTHING else was maintained. But buying a high mileage 4s isn't scary if it was taken care of.

I agree not going to get much for $2k and a 2006 Apex engine should be aok. No cracked header and the rest are cheap fix. Difficult to think previous owner did nothing at all in 11,000 miles but if true this speaks favorably for the quality built into Yamaha sleds. Doing routine maintenance on an Apex pays dividends in years of ownership.

Guys thanks. I did screw up a bit as it was an Attack and not an Apex but I assume the comments are still valid. Going to take a pass on this sled as cant get a real feel for what has been done on the sled. Will probably up the budget a bit and look for a sled that I can get better history on.

Thanks for the comments.

The Attak is an Apex and that’s what you want. The Attak is 136 later became 144 Apex xtx. The Apex 121 didn’t hook up very well unless studded to the max. The Attak is well worth repairing and sought after sled at that price.
