2008 Polaris 600 HO RMK concern

Ok folks, I am including a pic here. I bought this sled up at Haydays in 2010 from a rental place out west. After two successful seasons of riding here in the Midwest and one year back out in Wyoming, I noticed some grease on the chassis. It is on the right side of the sled right above where your right foot sits. I am mildly concerned that this grease is not just "stuff" coming from the engine compartment but actually maybe a seal or bearing is going. Anyone have thoughts on what this might be?

Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

There are any number of things that could cause that misty oil look you have there. Exhaust is right there, maybe the connection between the pipe and the can is leaking a little and causing it, could be oil coming off of the pull rope. Those tend to get exhaust oil on them or from the oil resevoir and that can cause the same spray. Could be the oil resevoir spilling a little and it spraying back. OR, could be chain case, which is right there as well.

I think if you open up the side panel, take out the exhaust can, and try to follow the trail, you'l figure out what it is. It's likely not anything serious. Just normal use.

Very hard to tell by pic. It could be brake dust. bearing you would be worried about is on other side. check your chaincase oil level. Usually when a chain case seal goes it goes big time. I have over filled my oil and had it mix with brake dust and make a similiar looking Black wet sooty substance that appears by your boot well.

The IQ chassis the chaincase cover is plastic.... and if you look at it there are no bolts on the bottom of it. My Fusion would leak a little after i used a sled lift which was odd. come to find out the belly pan is touching and vibrating against the bottom the of lip of the cover and causing it to leak from the chaincase.

Simple fix- pull off the cover clean up the cover, leave the rubber seal in the cover and use a thin bead of Ultra Grey RTV on the botton and sides (about 3/4 around) and then put it back on but leave the bolt just barely snug. Then after a day or so when the RTV is cured go and snug them up a little more-- this will create a better seal. I only had to re-do this fix once and that was after the dealer used a sled dolly to move my sled around. I showed their mechanic why NOT to use one as it caused a leak.

There was a recall on this problem. If there isn't a metal bracket around the bottom of the chaincase cover, then you should check into getting the recall taken care of. It should still be free of charge from Polaris. They also have an issue with warping, thus the recall.

Ok, clarification: The recall I "recall" was on my 2006 Fusion. Not positive they had it on the 08 selds too.

that 08 RMK probably has the bracket from the factory OR its a magnesium cover, that residue in the pic is up top by the tank not down in the foot well so id say its not coming from the bottom of the chaincase and running up hill... odds are like someone said it brake dust mixed with oil from exhaust or the oil bottle if some may have missed the hole. My IQr chassis did that alot

To me, it looks me like nothing more than brake dust clinging to little exhaust residue. I wouldn't be overly concerned with it. Now, I am not a "Polaris" guy, but I've owned & ridden sleds for over 30 years & this doesn't look any different than any I've owned.-Mezz

X2. Oh and I happen to know a Polaris guy who has a sled with much more of that on his sled then you (me). No worries. p.s. It's the belt dust that Doo spews I could not get used to, constantly cleaning yellow side panel got old real fast.
