2015 Purpose Built Sleds

Reading thru the August American Snowmobiler I noticed 20 different subtitles for 2015 lineups. As I read thru each classification I understood the sled feature differences & we sure have a lot of features to sort thru to make the best personal sled choice. It has to be a difficult task for a newbie to make the best choice for him or her with engine, track, shock differences & variance within a single model. I like having these choices but wonder how long the OEMS can support so many models? Maybe we are finally coming to the point where you can choose exactly what you want ice ripper track with lug length, your fav shocks, handlebar package in the exact color scheme you prefer. Your thoughts?

I absolutely agree with what you just posted. I sometimes wonder why we need so many variations. Seems to me we could get by with four or five models in each brand.

Sledders are always bellyaching about the price on these machines. For the OEMs to come up with and engineer everything---Someone has to bear the cost.

It also seems these sleds are getting more dependent on the electronics. Why do we need Multifunction Gauges? Just more to go wrong yet drives the price up.

O.K. I'll get off my soap box now.

What really busts my chops is sometimes the best shock package & graphics is Spring only order. Yeah I know how the Spring order helps the OEM but to limit the model build to Spring only to me can reduce overall sales of that model. I would much rather order the features I want than have to stay within the marketing box of prepackaged sleds. Indy lovers will not like this since cookie cutter sled but a cookie cutter sled would never meet my needs.

Believe it or not....with alla the yakking about choice....studies show that as people we prefer having a few good choices as opposed to having too many to sift through....as a matter of fact we also don't mind others making our choices for us.

To tag onto what others have said, I agree, ...building off an ala carte menu costs more. That's why very few of us order our cars and trucks now-a-days as was very common a couple decades ago.

Way back in a former life, 90-98, I used to work for Polaris and I remember this exact conversation. We had something like 35 different models, variations, etc... Over the next yr or 2 we cut it down to 13-15 models. Now being the guy responsible for all the stampings, that made me very happy. But as you can see now that lasted about 3-4 yrs and it was right back to a ridiculous amount of offerings. And they still don't have the sled I want. Just give me a standard 600 switchback. I don't want it in the rush chassis or the assault version.

Going thru this now with 2015 4 banger SUVs. Wild card features are AWD, homelink, dual climate control & passenger power seat. Some OEMS have some of these features many do not have all of them....very fustrating! I'm willing to pay but can't buy what is not offered. :(

Same here...I'd like to see the Indy with the new chassis front, the 800 H.O. and track length options....keep the monkey bars, I just can't get used to it....LOL
