25% fewer WI deer taken

I got that wolf picture in an email about 3 weeks ago. One thing that came to my mind is how did that guy lift and hold a 230 lb animal off the ground? Ever try to throw a 170 lb deer into the back of your truck by yourself?

Big Mac Bridge says deer kill down by a shade less than 40%, over last year and it was no record last year either.

Economy
Lack of snow
QDM price to be paid
Predation...coyotes galore.

Passed on 20-30 deer this season so far. Lots of shooting around us opening morning but got real slow after that. I hunt just North of St. Croix Falls WI and we normaly do pretty well. Between my brother and law and I we have a total of 3 down so far. Muzzeloader starts today and I will be out in the woods looking for that 10 pointer that is sneaking around!!!

We ended well for the 9 day hunt also. 9 hunters, 5 bucks, 4 does. Nothing large. I saw about 20 deer total through the 5 full days I hunted near Neillsville, WI. Overall, it appeared just like every other year. Lots of shooting and we all had deer in the freezer at the end of regulation.

I hear people complain non-stop that they are not seeing deer. They move..... You need to move with them. They may have been there 3 years ago but may have been pushed by people, animals, or whatever you think may have moved them. The point is, we may need to adjust our hunting location to match where the deer are. Whether that is down the next unit, or clear across the state.

How does Canada support having so many bears, yet you can go there and hunt for moster deer? I even believe they may have way more wolves than Wisconsin covering a larger area. If the hunting and management is so much better in another state, please do feel free to go there. I know I do. 2010 will put me in Montana, Colorado, and Wisconsin for hunting.

I've told this story before on here, so I'll make it quick.

This was back in 2001, my 2nd year hunting north east of Winter, WI about 15 miles. I shot a deer about 4:00pm, just before dusk, swore I hit it, but couldn't find the blood in the leaves with a flashlight. Yes, I waited until it was dark as we had a party of 4 hanging out thinking there might be another.

Next day on my afternoon walk out to the stand, I found the blood trail, followed it about 300 yards, where I found the deer, dead, and the hind quarters GONE in less than 24 hours. Wolf tracks all around the area that year. This was only about 1000 feet from my cabin at the time.

They are out there, and they wait for what they want.

When you get a natural balance like Isle Royale moose/wolf study it shows the wolf populations flucuate with the moose population. I would suspect a few Wolves to be dying off shortly. The bears eating fawns have a small window. Last year woodruff dnr reported over 30 orphaned cubs! Was this because someone shot the mommy in their bird feeder or did the dnr live trap the mom and haul her up to the UP line and release her?most WI. hunters interested in the Hunt ,donate the venison to the food pantry!
