Anyone out there have a 4 place aluminum(don't know exact dimensions) that doesn;t have trailer brakes? just wondering because I found a good deal on brand new Chilton 4 place but it doesn't have brakes. It seems like an awfully big trailer not to have brakes on at least one axle. If any of you are pulling a trailer like this with 3 or 4 sleds I'd appreciate any feedback you would have. Thanks and Merry Christmas!

I have a 3 place open, No Brakes, I've put 4 sleds on it and towed with no problems.
I tow with an 04 Expedition. I think with a smaller vehicle you would have to be a little more cautious.

A few years ago I pulled a 4 place 20 foot with 4 full size sleds and an Enticer 250 on it, it had brakes but they weren't working anymore, no issues at all stopping with a F150.

I drove my Aluma 22' with 5 sleds on it with the brakes not working for 3 years, and never had problems with my Chev. 1500 Crew Cab. It's nice to have, and does make a difference. Mostly when it comes to icy and snowy conditions, not having that weight pushing on the truck, but if you are careful, you'll be fine.

Sorry Guys But !!!

I wouldn't even think of trailering any amount of sleds without brakes. The dealer guy who I bought my 12 Ft triton enclosed thought I was crazy ordering it with brakes, tried to talk me out of it but I said no deal unless. I had a 3 place flo enclosed gull wing style and it kept me out of some hairy situations because of the brakes. But this is just my opinion.

When I bought my four place enclosed I spent over 350.00 on the brakes. Had the drums turned, new shoes, magnets etc. With the controller (Tekonsha Voyager) turned up to full power you could barely feel the brakes and no way could you lock them. I think the drums and magnets are so small on a snowmobile trailer they are basically useless. Since I have unhooked them and never had a problem. I tow with a ful size van and full size truck.

We've towed our 4 place aluminum open for 7-8 years now, no brakes on it. No problems ever.

Here is the answer..... http://www.redneck-trailer.com/ Brake kits are cheap. You can get complete backing plates assemled with all new parts for around 40-50 a wheel and new drums are 30-40 each. So for around 300.00 you can put all NEW brakes on any trailer.

So if you find a GREAT deal on a trailer with no brakes, Buy it and use some money you saved and put brakes on it. Eric

You just need to watch your weight limit and stay within the laws. Wisconsin requires brakes when the trailer and load exceeds 3,000#s. If you get caught it will be a fine. Plus why put others at risk because you do not have brakes.

Seen this on the thanksgiivng trip out west this year. Just because it can be done doesnt make it safe!

You can get by most of the time no problem. Throw in some bad weather and you can get into trouble real quick with no trailer brakes. Many times when the roads are slick its nice to be able to aply the trailer brakes manualy to slowly, slow you down and keep the trailer behind you and not trying to pass you! Eric

I would say brakes would be a good idea but if u cant afford them just be careful and give yourself plenty of stopping time and you'll be just fine. We have pulled the racecar on the car trailer for years with no breaks and a half ton truck and haven't had problems. just remember that you dont have trailer brakes when ur pulling.

And hope a deer doesn't abruptly jump in front of your vehicle en route to & from your play area! Of course that could be a hair raising experience with or without trailer brakes!

Its funny you say that. Thats exactly what happened to me on the last trip. I was headed west on I-80, somwhere in the middle of Nebraska around 3-4 in the morning. Cruising along at 75 in the left lane (its smoother in that area) and just like that I see a buck on a dead run and swurve all the way to the right lane and miss it. Nothing like a lane change at 75 in a 3/4 suburban pulling a 4 place enclosed to give you a little wake up! Eric

Think about it, If you go over 3000 Lbs in Wisconsin and run into someone with no Brakes and KILL them it is Reckless Homicide. Is it worth the Chance. 4 Sleds and a trailer is over 3000 Lbs.

You should also check out state laws I know that in Michigan if a trailer has more then one axle one of the axles has to have brakes and a brake away switch. The load enforcement also carry a voltage meter so they can check that little battery to make sure it still has a charge to operate the brakes if the trailer did brake away.
