550 fan cooled questions

Assuming you're talking about the Polaris 550, run away as fast as you can and as far as you can. Many of those motors are a ticking time bomb. Piston and crank failures are pretty common.
Major difference? = besides the fact that it's liquid cooled, the 600 will have about 35-40'ish more HP and be more dependable.

Did I say RUN from the 550?

The Poo 550 fan is a slug with issues. Do not buy one. Not even comparable to a 600 liquid. Go with the liquid.

the Rev MXZ550f was introduced to race in the fan class and is a great intro racer for the younger class. Available in the original Rev chassiss untill 2008 I believe. I have worked on several in the GSX and touring platforms and are nice reliable sleds. top end about 60 maybe a little more. fuel milage is not stellar, but you are basically running wide open if trying to keep up with the guys. Most were purchased by the rental companies, so not a lot on the showroom floors. No experience with the Polaris 550, but I think they should have kept the original piston port 488. bulletproof for years in the liquid and fan versions. Have a couple Cat 440 fans now for the kids, single carb version hasn't changed in 20+ years, not that it needed to. Dont make enough power to hurt themselves really. super cheap to re-build if needed.

yup,,, OM gets 11 mpg's with his but there are a nice light weight reliable sled, great handling, My yammi 485 fan runs close to 70 and OM does that as well.

Polaris 550 Fan has 60 hp Polaris 600 Liquid has 120 hp LOL. We had an 01 Sport Touring 550 bought new. It blew up at 100 miles, and again at 4500. Dealer bought it outright after they had it torn down for $700, and they ended up selling it for $2600. Did we lose money? Yes. Did I know how to rebuild a sled when I was 10? No and neither did my dad. Run as far away as possible from it. If you're looking at sleds in the 2000ish range, if you can find a 488 fan or liquid, that would be a good buy. Rock solid motor, 75 hp and cheap and easy to fix.

I have to say run from the fan as well,
my 488 polaris fan cooked a piston at zero F last year . In addition , it bogs out and will barly run at 35F . I think A 600 liquid is a much better idea.
2 ridding buddys have over 8000 miles on there 600 sdi (ski-doo) and they have not had any motor problems (they have " I hit another tree in the woods problems" but not motor problems!!

I guess I didn't run fast enough......I just sold my wife's 01 550 Supersport with 7945 flawless miles on it. Never touched the clutch, motor, track. Put on a set of slides once. Was a very depndable sled that we took touring in Canada, and out west to Yellowstone. Maybe we had a rare one, but I had no complaints at all. When I sold my 01 600XC it had over 13000 miles on it with no problems other than blowing the track at 11000 miles. This is the first time I found out that my son and wife were riding a time bomb. Heck if I would have known that 9 years ago I would have let my ex ride it more often...........would have been cheaper than my divorce lol....

And no voltage regulator? or drive bearing? and massive fuel consumption for no horse power? I protect Poo to the death but that sled is a dud. You were lucky or forgetful?

I run my wife's 2005 Supersport 550F and it does get poor gas mileage for the hp. Other than that very fun sled to ride, light weight and whippy. Onoy issue thus far the bolt on the gear sheared off causing me to have to replace the chain case, chain and gears this last year.

enough said. It is an entry level sled that Poo cranked out because they needed to fill this gap. They should of stayed with a 488 fanner that kicks the snot out of the 550 fan big time in longevity, fuel consumption, price and overall reliability. Poo has had an extreme learning curve on building motors in the US. That is why Cat has been scared to death to give it a go. Why mess with something that works? Poo went and put made in USA all over their sleds and were told by the Poo buyers to back it up. Hence Poo jumped in, ego and all and started building motors they were not ready to build. Poo has always tested their sleds on the consumers and adjusted from that. Doo got wise and did their homework. Poo lost the market for this blunder. Now back to square one, dump the 550 motored Poo sled unless you just plan to "Granny panny it around the house" it is not ment to run with the big Dogs. I do not stear wrong.

I will agree it was fuel thirsty for the hp, but it was a good sled for my son at the time. The only thing I added to it was a fuel filter. And trust me, my memory is very good. I was just very surprised to see all the negative posts on this sled. I sold it to my brother-inlaw, jeez I hope it dosen't blow and start a family fued

I have seen some Polaris 550's with over 50,000 miles on them. Sure they have needed a rebuild or four but they are still running.

It was the Nikasil motors after 2007 that had a lot of issues. The IQ 550 Shift was especially poorly engineered and had a lot of issue with the stators, pistons, cranks, regulators, fuel pump mount, and motor mounts.

Oh will it be fun to read the Arctic Cat, US built motor threads in a couple years.
