97 Ultra SPX 700 engine rebuild

My compression is at the lower end (or more). I've worked on car engines before but not sled engines and I want to rebuild this engine. So, I'm looking for some advice. I found a company (U.S. Chrome in WI) that reworks cylinders. Anyone do business with them? And what about the rest of the engine? Should I replace other items while I have the engine open? Other advice? Thanks for any help.

How many miles on motor? Depending on miles most people might just rebuild the top end. New rings and pistons and gaskets and use a ball hone to deglaze the cylinders. If you want to go further spilt the crankcases and have the crank checked and trued and replace crankcase seals. How much you want to rebuild depends on how much you want to spend. Gasket kit to do the top end about $ 61.00 complete gasket kit about $ 77.00 piston kits about $ 422.00. Having crank trued around $ 300.00 or more depending if it needs bearings or connecting rods replaced. The cylinders I believe are nikasil bore if there is scoring on the cylinder wall might have to be rechrome plated or bored out and resleeved which is an additional cost.

why would you have to have cyls re plated? unless you have a major melt down with piston taking out jug you should be fine with just honing jugs and dropping in new pistons that is a ez top end to do had to do a few ultras in my day maybe 5 hr the fist time

I was looking at replating the jugs becuase a couple of years ago I had it in a shop and that's what they recommended (without taking the engine apart). After hearing you guys I think they wanted to do more work than needed (or charge me for work they didn't do). The lining on the one I've removed so far has no signs of scoring. Thanks guys

check the cylinders for out-of-roundness and how much the dia. is wore. if these are in tolerance and there are no bad scuffs or scratches there would be no reason to have them replated. you can get a piston kit way cheaper than that. i use spi in my xcr 800 and they are about $150 for all three and never had an issue with them. good luck

I also used some cheep spi on a ultra yrs ago sled had like 3200 mi on it when did top end .I had some light scoring from burning down center jug but put together anyway with no re plating.ended up selling to a guy in sled club at cabin he still has that top end in it like 7or8 yrs latter with his kids pounding the heck out of it.I would not wast the money on OEM for a older high mileage sled.no reason to over think it if it is running now and just needs to be refreshed go to eBay spend less than 200 on a top end kit slap it together pound on it for a few more yrs

One of the big ideas behind nikasil is that it does not wear as quickly. If you have no scrapes or gouges just touch them with a ball hone and you should be just fine. I would have a real problem paying for a cylinder job on a sled that old.
