A deal worth considering if you ride much in the UP

Along with our nightly lodging in Rockland (TheBluff), we also have another way for regulars to put their "heads in their beds" when they visit. I am going to have 1 or more openings coming up soon that I would like to fill. Here is the "scoop".....

2 bedroom apartment(s) in Mass City for rent, at the former lumber/hardware store. I do this on an annual basis (you rent for the entire year). It is your place. You furnish it, come and go as you please...year round. Your apartment is metered for electric by itself, you pay that bill along with rent each month. There are a total of 5 apartments, plus a group that rents the former store area too.

I have 4 groups that do this currently, most have been doing this for several years. I am told that for 4-6 guys, this becomes a very affordable option even for just the winter months. It is your second home. You can send Uncle Joe and Aunt Sally up for a weekend at your place or whatever. I know one group had an old high school friend that had not taken a vacation in years as they could not afford it....they sent them up and the family had a blast.

Some of the groups sublet out during times they are not using the apartment to further offset costs. When I have overflow in my nightly, I have given passed along contact info to groups that want to sublet to make a couple bucks. It all works very nicely.

I think all of the guys I have are regular johndee'ers. I will not mention names but I will invite any of them to chime in (as well as the guys that no longer rent this way...you too!) on how this arrangment works for them. I think all would agree it is a pretty cool way to do have a place for very little money. I charge everyone the same amount, if you are interested, please shoot me an email at mattw@wiesen.com.

I have a small amount of sled storage on site for a small fee and Plutchaks next door has storage in the former lumber building.

My son and his family live in one and it looks like they will be closing on a home purchase soon and will be moving. I also have a full time resident that I possibly will be moving. If you regularly ride with a group of people, this is worth looking into.

And from a snow-kermudgon like myself, this areas rocks in the 8 non-snow months each year. Atvs are legal on almost all county roads, there are hundreds of miles of legal atv trails, 15 miles to Lake Superior where you can go to one of the many accessible beach areas...build a fire and watch the sun go down.

Hope to hear from you!!

I am part of one of the groups and have zero complaints on the apartment. If you have 5-6 guys it works out very well price wise. You never have to worry about trying to lock down lodging and can easily just go when the snow hits.

Agreed, I'm also in with Slick and love the setup. We get in whenever we want, leave whenever we want, cook a lot of our own meals, always have the fridge stocked with food/drinks, and never have to worry about frantically calling around for lodging. I use the place in the summer for ATV'ing and and come up for the colors in October. If you haven't been to a beach on Lake Superior I can tell you a good one Matt recommended to me. It is my wife's favorite beach and worth the drive.

Electric isn't high because we shut it down when we're not there (even in the winter - downstairs is heated) and split it amongst everyone. We sublet it out for $20 per person a night occasionally and it helps keep the cost down.

We have 6 guys in our group and it works great. We have 4 single beds and two futons and everyone is comfy. We have slept 7 (maybe 8 once) and it also works.

As stated above, these apts are a convenient and economical way to enjoy the area as often as you would like. All the crews are great guys and Matt is great to rent from. If your interested, get ahold of "the bluff" and check them out. They also have cable, internet included and laundry/dryer on site.
