Albert Pujols...

...Just signed a 10 year $250 million deal with the LA Angels. WOW that is some money. Is any one person really worth that much coin? $68,400+ every morning he wakes up for the next 3,650 days. Good for him I guess but come on...

I know nobody like reading about this other side of the coin and maybe I should just say he's not worth it, but I won't.

He is worth it, as is Joe Mauer and Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez in thier day. Think of the ad revenue, jersey sales, and tickets sold just to see these stars. A team could easily see 5M in higher gate revenue per season if they are a winning team vs out of playoff contention. Plus merchandise sales, food, parking, advertising. It all adds up.

If you think owners are going to pay someone so much that they're losing money, not likely, at least not here in MN, team has a 100M-150M budget because they can earn that much back or more annually.

The guy is worth whatever someone is willing to pay him.

some people work to hard for their living and some get crazy pay for not much effort but those are the breaks if you want everything to be "equal" go to China and see how "equal" things are there.

Its not a game!! As a Cardinal fan I'm sorry to see him go but as usual the Cardinals will reload and dominate!!

I`m willing to bet the 11 years the Cardinals got from Albert were far more productive than the coming 10 years that L.A. are going to get out of him.
I hate to see him leave St. Louis but would of hated to pay him that much for 10 years and cripple the team financially.

It just shows how much the owners make or are worth. I know the one or two baseball games I go to per year aren't making them rich.

What you mean is he was worth it. There is no way his production over the next 10 years will be worth that kind of money. Essentially the Angels are paying for the success Pujols had in a Cardinals uniform. His numbers have been dropping over the last 4 years. He may have 3-4 more years at simlar production, then they'll be paying $25 million a year for a DH that hits .300 w/ 30HR's...not a good investment in my book. The only player whos production has gone up through the age range of Pujols contract was Barry Bonds and we all know that story. I am so glad Pujols did not end up a Cub!

As for Mauer, his contract has got to be one of the worst in recent history. There is no way the Twins can afford to put even an average set of players around him. The Twins handcuffed their future success because of Mauer's contract. It shows me Mauer was more about the money than wanting the Twins to win...

It will be interesting to see if he can live up to what they think he still has. Maybe a year two but 10. Does anyone know what the guaranteed money is.

It is crazy to think someone is worth that kind of money but it doesn't matter if he is or not, someone out there sure does and he in turn gets to be the lucky SOB of the year.

What wtp_22 said. I've been a Cardinal's fan since I was a kid...even though I've boycotted baseball due to their strikes and lack of professionalism at times...

Let's say that Pujols is INDEED 32 as he claims (some are saying he's actually 35) - how could he possibly be productive over the next 10 years solid. No more HGH!! His contract is for a man who will be 42-45 at the end of it.

It's not like the Cardinals didn't offer him $210 million. This wasn't enough for him? I get that what he was looking for was to be compensated for the "lower" salary he's received in the past...but really? $210 million wasn't enough?? for a player who's looking at the end of his career...not even close to the middle of his career? For most of us...a million is hard to comprehend. What's an additional 40 million when you're talking about over $200 million. I guess good for him. But it's not like the Cardinals offered him chump change. Thanks for everything...and have fun in So Cal.

The only reason that he's worth it is because people continue to pay the elevated prices for tix and concessions when they go to the ballpark.

I know nobody like reading about this other side of the coin and maybe I should just say he's not worth it, but I won't.
