Amazing picture a result of wind storm in NW WI

The attached picture is a result of the wind storm that went through NW WI on July 1, 2011. While out scouting the trails this year prior to clearing, my groomer boss (pictured) came across this! There were about 3-4 large pines that were blown over the trail (the trail is just behind the uprooted earth) and they pulled this huge wall of earth and roots up with it. I've never seen anything like it! As we cut the pines up during our weekend of clearing trails and cut the last tree, the entire wall of earth and roots went slamming back to the ground and it looked like nothing had ever happened, other than there were several large pine stumps just sticking out of the ground. I wish we would have had a video of it, it was something to see.

Wow, that's really a weird thing. Looks like a very shallow root system there. Would not have wanted to be standing where that person is when it all decided to flip back down!

Yeah, I told Gordon he wouldn't have wanted to be there when it fell! You can see in the very left of the picture this area is bordering a swamp, and yes, the roots are very shallow. In fact, they come above ground a little across the trail in that area. The whole wall isn't even in the picture as it went past where the cameraman was at. It must have been 40 yards long +.

Wow. That is incredible. It would be neat to see another picture taken from the same spot now with the ground back in place and only the stumps showing.

There is a small trail leading from our house on LG to trail 1, this fall the trail was blocked by a large maple that had blown over with the root ball intact. Brought the saw out and cut the end farthest from the root ball (far side of the path) then made a cut closer to the root ball, as soon as I got about 2/3 of the way through the tree I heard a loud snap and half the tree was gone. Very glad no one else was near the tree, it shot up very quickly. I too wish I had video...

That really is an amazingly large chunk of ground. Can't say I've ever seen such a sizeable piece of ground peeled up like that. A whole lot of shallow roots to keep that all together.-Mezz

I know, we were all bummed that none of us had a camera with us. My camera on my BlackBerry was acting up and one guy had his cell phone but didn't know how to take pic's. It's not the easiest place to get to this time of the year without driving down the trail quite a ways either. If I would happen to go by, I will get a pic. I may even ask Gordon to take one, he lives fairly close.

It's on trail 41 not far from intersection 20 on the Burnett Co map, just north of it I believe, not too far from Mallard Lake Resort. It will look totally different as it's hard to tell with it flopped back down, but I plan on checking it out this winter for sure.

Thanks. That sounds like something that happens to me. I never seem to have the camera when I want to take a picture.
