Another big Bear out for the season

Fall bear hunts rarely use bait since it isn't very effective then...spring hunts are where food matters.

Bear meat is very good to eat and I know several guys who go and are meticulous cleaning and preparing it for the haul out. They never have trouble consuming it.

And yes, 700+ is huge and near records....those are big blackies....approaching grizzly sizes. No doubt that bear was at prime or even perhaps past it.

there was also a bear shot near Hawkins, WI that live weight was 711 lbs, field dressed at 656lbs. It was shot by a 17 yr old.

The WI Outdoors News lists another bear shot in Shawano County on 9/8/10 at 736 lbs live and 660 lbs dressed as weighed at Kropf's Meats in Bowler, WI. The article also indicates a black bear was taken last year in Lincoln County that had a live weight of 727 lbs and dressed out at 660 lbs on a certified scale. Wisconsin has some big black bears, that's for sure.

"I don't get the whole hunting for sport thing"????

PLEASE DONT GET ME OR MANY OTHERS STARTED. I respect the fact that you and anybody else is entitled to a OPINION on this or any other issue but Hunting is not only part of our heritage as a country its a way of celebrating everything that nature provides us. Its a way to put food on our tables. I myself feed my family with at least 2 whitetails, many many ducks and upland birds that mother nature provideds us each year. My wife, and girls ages 6 and 8 have all come to learn the Blessing of Life that it is that these animals provide us with sustinence and nutrition......

I wont get argumentative but imagine your most "calming, soul searching, relaxing activity" that you enjoy and look forward to. Thats what hunting is to most hunters.

The good lord only gives us so many sunrise to enjoy in our journey called life and I dont plan on missing one of them. Hunting is passionate and spiritual to me. I gives me time to reflect on life and all thats important.

I think you missed the point. Hunting for food, and the traditions are important, and I'm all for it. Hunting just to see how big an animal you can kill, for no other purpose than ego, is a sickness. I want to start hunting, and I will only hunt what I will eat. Just a pose with a dead animal isn't appreciating the blessings we have been given, it is compensation for something else.

MXZ chris,

I too hunt for "trophy's, big racks and to have my picture taken with whatever animals" I may harvest. I have to large whitetails, mounted looking at me every morning when I decend our stairwell to the main floor. While there are instances where animals are simply KILLED for there size and no other matter dont mistake a Person pictured with a Trophy Game animal and simply assume that person is a "SPORT HUNTER" only. Everyone that hunts is always Chasing and Dreaming of that Trophy in the back of there mind everytime they hit the field. To most true trophies only come once in a lifetime. And handfull of hunters may harvest a few trophies over their years. As with any activity in life (snowmobiling included) it only takes one bad example for people to "associate" that behavior or mindset at the time of "said incident" and try and label or assume thats the "mindset" of entire group whom enjoy that recreation.

I would encourage you to get involved in hunting if you desire. The true sportsman has some of its most rewarding "HUNTS" on the days you never even see the game pursued. Being a hunter or a sportsman is born at heart, it inate!!! Its like being born with blue eyes or blond hair.

I am with you. I have some of my best fishing days not catching anything. I assume you ate the animals whose heads are on the wall. I am all for that. I just don't get "killing" for sport alone. I understand that the scouting, tracking, and eventual harvest are more than just ego. Those skills may come in handy here soon. I just don't get sitting by a pile of doughnuts waiting for Yogi to stop by, and shooting him. That's not hunting, that's just killing, and I don't agree with that. My .02.

While the "pile of donuts" may be true when it comes to bear hunting I would argue would is today's rage of hunting whitetails off of "food plots" alot different???? Or even hunting geese out of a picked corn or bean field???? Dont get me wrong I understand and agree with your point. But it seems to me that more and more as a society (collective group for an activity) of hunters we are observant to the things we might not necessarily agree with yet BLIND to our own acitivities that when looked at with clarity and objectivity are done for the sheer purposes of SLANTING the odds in our favor as sportsman. It is common practice to hunt whitetails off of "feed piles" in the U.P. I know I have done it and have friends that own property and have hunted that way as family tradition for lifetimes. I will reserve my opinion about "feed piles". I understand the reasons for and the beliefs of those against. The fact of the matter is there is always "something seen as extreme" to me and you and "routine for others". Amazingly this is what makes America great!!!!

Bottom line is that hunting very much revolves around patterning animals. Whether it be patterning for purposes of FEEDING, Sleeping, or breeding or others. To what extreme as person manipulates those natural urges of these game animals is a question that that HUNTER has to LIVE with!!!! And it is our right to disagree with and question.

So long as it is legal and hunters remain within the law I try my hardest to reserve my judgement within and respect their beliefs as hard as it may be.

Well said. I think we are on the same page.

Just wondering, what's the thought on having dogs chase a bear to exhaustion where he climbs a tree, walk up under the tree, bang.

That's a whole other can of worms...... Ask those bear hunters what they think of the Wolves in N WI.

Skidooski,

I will agree with the prior "here we go again, another can of worms". BUT,

I truly see no problem with hunting animals with dogs. Actually when one reflects back over history hunting animals with dogs has been the norm for centuries. Here in our own backyard, America animals have been hunted by dogs since this country was established. From the smallest of animals like Game birds, to medium sized game like foxes and coyotes to large BIG GAME animals hunting with dogs also has a place in history that is more rich with TRADITION than something sinister. The actual sport of hunting with dogs was brought to this country by our setttlers from Europe where hunting with dogs has probably been going on for centuries if not longer. I am embarrassed to use a word like probably while trying to make a point but I am not a Historian.

It amazes me to see how our modern day life has made many people forget a thing like History before forming opinions. While I am not dismissing anyone who is against Hunting animals by Dog, I respect all believes whether I disagree or not. I think I made myself perfectly clear on that earlier. I would offer that this too, bear hunting via dogs, could be a case of Carrying on a sport of Tradition, a way of life passed on thru generations than something our Modern world has come to shun. It also amazes me that people want to dismiss the fact that many of these example animals are very smart creatures and hunting with that help of other means is many times very much required to have a successfull hunt.

Like it or not the day we settled this country was the day we decided animals would be hunted. From the early days of providing early settlers with food or out of self defense to our modern world of encrochement into there areas there is no turning back from hunting of animals, from a sheer population control stand point. The goverment could establish all the natural parks or game reserves it wanted but without returning to natural selection and free range of animals they will have to be controlled population wise.

And boy am I gonna catch Heck for this one but, "THEY LOOK DAM GOOD ON A DINNER PLATE"!!!!!!!!

I agree with MXZ Chris. I often wonder when I see a picture and article about bagging a large bear, deer, etc... are they going to use that for it's resources provided by nature or is it going to be stuffed and posed? I have no problem with hunting animals for food. We raise cattle for meat so I completely understand using them for food, but to kill something just because... I can't wrap my head around that. If you are someone who hunts just for fun I'm not saying you are wrong, I just don't get it.
